MATERIALS
•¾ yard red tonal*
•1⅞ yards green tonal*
•2⅓ yards pale gray tonal*
•Backing to size
•Batting to size
•Thread
•Basic sewing tools and supplies
*Fabrics from Bold Beautiful Basics by Northcott used to make sample.
PROJECT NOTES
Read all instructions before beginning this project.
Stitch right sides together using a ¼" seam allowance unless otherwise specified.
Materials and cutting lists assume 40" of usable fabric width for yardage.
WOF – width of fabric
HST – half-square triangle
QST – quarter-square triangle
CUTTING
From red tonal cut:
•2 (13¼") F squares
•6 (1½" × WOF) strips, stitch short ends to short ends, then subcut into:
2 (1½ × 53½
) J strips and 2 (1½ × 51½
) I strips
From green tonal cut:
•36 (3⅞") A squares
•6 (3½" × WOF) strips, stitch short ends to short ends, then subcut into:
2 (3½ × 59½
) L strips and 2 (3½ × 53½
) K strips
•7 (2½" × WOF) binding strips
From pale gray tonal cut:
•2 (18¼") H squares then cut twice diagonally
•2 (13¼") E squares
•2 (9⅜") G squares then cut once diagonally
•9 (7¼") B squares
•9 (6½") C squares
•36 (3½") D squares
COMPLETING THE BLOCKS
1. Draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of four A squares. Lay two marked squares right sides together on one B square as shown in Figure 1, matching up corners and drawn lines. Stitch ¼" on each side of the drawn line. Cut along the line and press both units open. Make 18.

2. Referring to Figure 2, position one marked A square on each unit from step 1, right sides together. Stitch ¼" on each side of the drawn line. Cut along the line and press both A-B units open. Repeat to make a total of 36 A-B units.

3. Lay out one C square, four A-B units and four D squares into three rows of three as shown in Figure 3. Sew into rows and join the rows to complete the Star block. Make nine.

4. Draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of one E square. Referring to Figure 4, position the marked E square on one F square, right sides together. Stitch ¼" on each side of the drawn line. Cut along the line and press both E-F units open. Make four.

5. Referring to Figure 5, draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of one E-F unit, perpendicular to the seam line. Lay the marked unit right sides together on a second E-F unit with seams nesting. Stitch ¼ on each side of the drawn line. Cut along the line and press open. Square up to measure 12½
square. Make four Hourglass blocks.

Here’s a Tip
Pin or clip rows together before stitching. Sew with the blocks on top of setting triangles to help ease the fullness of bias edges.
COMPLETING THE QUILT
1. Referring to the Assembly Diagram, lay out the blocks into five diagonal rows. Add in H setting triangles and G corner triangles. Sew the blocks and triangles into rows and join the rows to complete the quilt center. Add corner triangles
