Chapter One
Leto followed Tommy into the control room. For the last six months, she’d spent time with him and tried to learn the music business. She liked working for the triad of Crane, John, and Hera. She never thought she’d get along with Hera, but now she considered her former rival a trusted confidante.
Still, she wasn’t exactly sure where she belonged in the grand scheme of life. She had her wolf and her job with the triad, but she doubted she fit in. Hera might trust her, but she still looked at her with caution. But why shouldn’t she? Leto had tried to curse Hera by entombing her in a golden statue. Granted, Zeus had pitted Leto and Hera against each other, but knowing the truth didn’t help salve Leto’s conscience.
At least working for the triad helped give Leto skills to survive in the human realm. She’d mastered social media, using a phone, taking photos, and recording video. According to Hera, she’d become vital to the team. Maybe. A hundred other people could do her job. She wasn’t special.
Then there was Tommy. He tried to help, but he had his various jobs to do. He couldn’t keep her company.
Why do you look so sad?
Tommy asked. He sat beside her at the back of the room. You look miserable.
She couldn’t tell him the truth. Her biggest issue was him—or rather him dating someone that wasn’t her. I’m fine.
Which is the universal answer that means you aren’t.
He grasped her hand. They don’t need us in here right now. Crane will be recording awhile and won’t need us to retrieve dinner for another hour. Come on.
He tugged her from her seat.
When he touched her, she felt sparks. Honest to Zeus, there were sparks. Her heart ached for him and she longed for Tommy’s kiss. Every time he hugged her or let her sleep on him on the long flights, she wished she could be his girl. They could have a good time—except he had a girlfriend.
Tommy walked with her to the patio just off the recording studio. He stopped at the railing, overlooking the Las Vegas skyline. Spill. What’s wrong?
I’m fine.
She let go and rubbed her bare arms. She’d spent so many years upset with Hera for the way Hera banished her. Leto had been young and impressionable. Having the affair with Hera’s husband, Zeus, had been her biggest mistake, second only to bearing Zeus’s children.
She’d grown since then and understood how she and everyone who came into Zeus’s path had been manipulated by him.
You’re not fine.
Tommy leaned on the railing. Missy says she’s fine when she’s not and I have to guess what’s bothering her. Most of the time I can’t tell what’s wrong and she keeps saying she knows I don’t understand.
You spend a lot of time working. She’s probably feeling left out or abandoned.
She might feel that way if she were the one at home while he was away.
You think?
He clasped his hands together. Why doesn’t she say so?
She doesn’t want to look like she’s complaining?
Why was he asking her yet again about how to deal with his girlfriend? He should be talking to Missy.
I guess. I told her Crane and John are demanding. You’ve seen it. Sometimes we don’t get sleep,
he said.
I know.
She’d spent so many hours trying to keep up with Crane and John. Crane buzzed from moment to moment and John happily followed him everywhere. Hera trailed along for the ride.
Why is it so much easier to talk to you than it is to Missy?
He bumped shoulders with her. Because there’s no pressure?
There aren’t any expectations, I suppose.
He’d never see her as date material, not like this. He was too busy worrying about Missy.
I’m glad I’ve got you. I need friends,
Tommy said. Missy thinks I’m proposing, too. Imagine that?
Are you?
She hadn’t seen that coming. Tommy?
Not that I know of.
Tommy shrugged and the light of the setting sun glowed on his face. The effect made his skin appear flawless, like porcelain. It enhanced the blue in his eyes and added dimension to his dark hair. When he flexed his arms, she longed to run her fingers over the muscle. She loved the way he smelled like cognac, but he didn’t drink. He could’ve been a model or one of the statues on Olympus.
Do you think I should marry her?
Tommy asked. We don’t get along and I’m never home. Seems like we’d be doomed to fail.
You would.
He stared at her. I’m supposed to be finding out why you’re upset, you know. Not spilling my guts. You never did tell me.
You didn’t give me a chance to say.
He did tend to talk over her. According to people from her past, she lacked confidence to defend herself. Maybe they were right.
I’m sorry.
He blushed. Missy tells me to talk more. Yet with you, I can’t shut up.
You do.
She relaxed, not realizing he’d tensed her up so much.
So? Why are you upset?
I’m not upset.
He crooked one eyebrow. Then what are you worrying about?
Nothing.
She wasn’t sure she should tell him the truth. It’s okay.
Liar.
She rolled her eyes. If she couldn’t tell him the whole truth, then she’d disclose parts of it. I’m not sure I’m important here. You don’t need me and I’m wondering if it’s time for me to move on.
His eyes widened. Wait. What?
Well, you don’t need me. All I do is get in the way and I’m a wandering soul,
she said. Maybe it’s time for me to go. Get Wolfy and go on an adventure.
Unless you give me a reason to stay.
No.
He shook his head. You can’t.
Why not?
Because.
He frowned. "I don’t want you to go. I need your help. I need you."
Do you?
She leaned on the railing. Do you realize who I am?
Leto. Who else would you be?
The woman Hera had hated—at least one of them. She shrugged. Maybe you should read up on me.
You’re being vague.
He tucked a lock of her hair behind her ear and the touch seared her to her core. She longed to tangle up in his arms.
