About this ebook

LANIAKEA describes a series of adventures filled with twists and turns. Love has to deal with violence and perfidy. Despite this, science and technology make it possible to build a balanced society where respect allows the acceptance of differences. All the old values based on money and power fade away to give place to self-respect, respect for others and respect for nature. The emancipation of the humankind then extends through the astral continent Laniakea, home to Earth.

BOOK 2 “The Shift” follows intense moments when Ethan and Kate must each consider a brand new life with no other foundation but their love.

The consequences of their decision then become quite clear. Trips between the city of Quebec and Montreal are quite frequent. On one such trip, they face the rigors of a harsh Quebec winter storm. On their last Saturday in Quebec City, as the lovers have a romantic supper planned, an unexpected figure from Ethan's past arrives suddenly and clouds their evening.

We follow them in their daily lives, witness their intimate games and are there during that unforgettable evening, outside a jazz bar, when their very lives are threatened.

This entire time, Ethan promptly joins the top tier of a vast Canadian financial investment company. He then lays the groundwork for a merger proposal, which, among other things, sheds light on several minor instances of fraud taking place in the American company.

    Previously:

In Book 1, a severe car accident in Quebec’s Lower Town sparks a great romance between Kate and Ethan.

The couple seizes every moment granted to them by the Universe, as they slowly become enraptured and intoxicated by their sensuality. They also learn to master their own personal individuality, while nurturing and strengthening their bond.

Though infused with tenderness and respect, this paradise, still rather fragile and delicate, could suddenly come crashing down. And indeed, during one fateful dinner, Kate informs Ethan that she is considering moving to Montreal and taking on a very important position. Seeing this great and singular love vanishing before his eyes, Ethan can barely bring himself to accept this parting. He decides to leave the restaurant.

Kate launches behind him, without putting on her coat and catches up with him outside the restaurant. She takes his arm with vigour and strength to stop. Crying, she says:

I just thought this was a great opportunity for the both of us. I made a mistake, and I’m sorry, from the bottom of my heart. Listen to me: if you refuse, I’ll also refuse and stay here with you.

That doesn’t make any sense. If you refuse because you want to stay here with me, you will be frustrated and our relationship will be over. That’s inevitable. In fact, it will start here, today, at this damn table.

    Tearful, she continues:

Ethan, please. I see that I was in the wrong. But why not just go along? We don’t know what’s going to happen. And then we can decide together. Please, let go of this and just have an open mind. I’m begging you to come back inside.

He takes a deep breath and, returning to the restaurant, he says:

I used to live in Montreal. I hate driving in Montreal. It’s crazy there.

She notices her lover’s dismay. She thinks:

He’s pulled himself together. Now, I have to pull myself together, also. Otherwise, I will lose him. I have been foolish. I must think and act on this, on our future.

Back to the table, nervously, she suggests:

We could find apartments near our work and even in the same building. We could live near each other. We would be a lot closer. We’ll drive as little as possible. There are taxis. Your house is already on sale and you still don’t know where you’ll live. We could see each other more often. We could make love every day if we want to. We could…

Tell me about this project, he says, looking at her again.

    A little reassured, she continues:

Okay. I won’t tell you the name of the company we’re interested in, but it’s in the US and six other countries. This company is actually larger than the one I work for. Some bad things have come to light. As a result, their sales are falling. There has been a significant loss of confidence. If the managers want to get back on track, it will take them years. The only way they can is if other people are involved. They’ve already started some discussions with my president. They even signed an exclusive agreement. They’ve agreed to start a financial analysis as soon as possible. Time is of the essence.

At this moment, a man approaches the table. He is rather tall and wears a dark suit with a light-grey shirt, no tie. Ethan gets up and Kate introduces them.

Ethan, this is Mario, the president. Mario, this is Ethan.

    Ethan shakes his hand, saying:

    Nice to meet you.

Nice to meet you. Are we on a first-name basis?

    Of course.

They all sit down. Ethan breaks the ice:

Mario, Kate told me a little about what we can call The Project

Mario stops him with his hand and says:

Hold on one moment, Ethan, if I may stop you. I would like to start this meeting by congratulating you for what you did last July. I also want to thank you. Kate is a big part of the company, and she has been a good friend to me for a long time. Also, congratulations on your medal of the National Assembly.

Thank you. Now, may I continue?

    Surprised, Mario answers:

    Of course.

So, Kate told me about this project. I don’t know a lot about it, but I know enough to understand. You ask her to come and be near you. I could understand that. I know you have a plan about me, but I’m not sure which one. I know that we’re in the middle of an interview, and it’s normal. But I have to say this: I am a consultant and my network is in the city of Quebec. I used to be a consultant in Montreal, but my network there has dissolved. I have to ask myself if I want to go back there again. There’s a lot at stake. And when I say a lot, I’m thinking of Kate. Sorry Kate! But I do have a couple of questions about the project.

Ethan, I thank you for clarifying and especially your frankness. Now, I understand your sober tone. I will gladly answer your questions.

Thank you. Is it a takeover or an acquisition?

Mario glances at Kate with a little smile. Ethan sees it and quickly looks at Kate, who also gives him a slight nervous smile.

    We don’t
