#1 To be conscious is to have some sort of phenomenology. Any kind of experience – any phenomenological property – counts as much as any other. Where there is experience, there is phenomenology, and where there is phenomenology, there is consciousness.
#2 The definition of consciousness is simple: it is any kind of subjective experience whatsoever. However, this is a good thing. When a complex phenomenon is incompletely understood, prematurely precise definitions can be constraining and even misleading.
#3 The hard problem of consciousness is the question of how it is that certain systems are subjects of experience. It is difficult to explain why there is something it is like to experience a mental image, or to experience an emotion.
#4 The idea that the universe is made of physical stuff and that conscious states are either identical to or somehow emerge from particular arrangements of this physical stuff is called physicalism. Dualism is the belief that consciousness and physical matter are separate substances or modes of existence, and that they never interact.

#1
To be conscious is to have some sort of phenomenology. Any kind of experience – any phenomenological property – counts as much as any other. Where there is experience, there is phenomenology, and where there is phenomenology, there is consciousness.
#2
The definition of consciousness is simple: it is any kind of subjective experience whatsoever. However, this is a good thing. When a complex phenomenon is incompletely understood, prematurely precise definitions can be constraining and even misleading.
#3
The hard problem of consciousness is the question of how it is that certain systems are subjects of experience. It is difficult to explain why there is something it is like to experience a mental image, or to experience an emotion.
#4
The idea that the universe is made of physical stuff and that conscious states are either identical to or somehow emerge from particular arrangements of this physical stuff is called physicalism. Dualism is the belief that consciousness and physical matter are separate substances or modes of existence, and that they never interact.
#5
Functionalism, the idea that consciousness is something that can be simulated on a computer, is controversial. It is easy to take it at face value and believe that consciousness is something that can be simulated on a computer. But this is not the case for many things.
#6
The zombie thought experiment is a common challenge to physicalist explanations of consciousness. It suggests that if you can imagine a world that is identical to our world, except that no consciousness is occurring, then consciousness cannot be a physical phenomenon.
#7
The real problem of consciousness is to explain, predict, and control the phenomenological properties of conscious experience. This means explaining why a particular conscious experience is the way it is, and how to control it through the brain and body.
#8
The real problem is distinct from the hard problem, which is explaining why and how consciousness is part of the universe in the first place. It focuses on phenomenology rather than on function or behaviour. It does not sweep the subjective aspects of consciousness under the carpet.
#9
The hard problem of consciousness is not an admission of defeat to the problem of it. The real problem is how to explain the properties and nature of conscious experiences without
