    One

I’ve been inside Aiden’s apartment a million times, but tonight feels different.

Tonight, my coat sleeves are dripping onto the grey tiles in his entranceway, the ends of my hair long and damp with rain. I’m pretty sure I look like a combination of a punk musician’s manic pixie dream girl and that lady who climbs out of the well in The Ring. Which is to say, frazzled.

Aiden closes the door behind us and pads into his dark apartment, flicking on lights and releasing his orange cat, Slippers, from her pet carrier.

Out you go, hellion, he says.

Slippers meows and stretches importantly, hopping onto the first level of her fuzzy, near-shredded cat tree by the kitchen. Her big eyes blink at me while Aiden pushes the carrier into its designated corner.

Be right back. He gives me a little smile. He’s fiddling with his blue shirt one-handed, doing that adorable thing guys do where they press their shirt to the center of their chest while they undo the buttons. I’m mesmerized. Come in and relax, if you want.

Aiden’s apartment floor is sparklingly clean, and the rain boots I’m wearing are the giant, lace-up kind that an 1800s military man probably once wore, the kind that take a small decade to take off. I shake my head. I’ll wait here.

Aiden nods and disappears behind a door to change out of his work clothes. Unlike my studio, his apartment has this new thing called rooms, so I don’t get to watch him change.

    Pity.

Or maybe not. I don’t know how my brain would react to seeing Aiden naked right now. I’m still basking in that post-orgasm glow—or, more accurately, that post-getting-myself-off-on-my-crush’s-lap glow—but the dreamy sea I’ve been floating in is starting to go cold, like a bathtub in need of a hot water refresher.

Less than an hour ago, Aiden said he’s crazy about me.

That seems pretty straightforward, right? But the more my bathtub cools, the more my anxiety’s poking holes into his meaning. I’d been sure that I wasn’t his type, but then he told me I was, and we’d played the highest stakes Dream Party 3 game of all time, and, through a series of misadventures, I was coming all over him, and then he said he was crazy about me.

At the time, I’d been sure we were two friends having
