Glossary
Think of your favourite plant, animal, fungus, or any of the fascinating types of organisms out there. What do you love about it? Is it the earth-covered snout of a badger emerging from her underground home, or the way the morning dew settles on a vibrant buttercup, or the beautiful, but toxic, sheen of a spotty toadstool hidden deep in a forest? Close your eyes and really picture it. How did that make you feel? Did you smile?
We need to understand the natural world. We need to admire it. We need to love it to protect it. We probably won’t all love all things, but you’ll find a lot to smile about if you just look. By making these connections, we can understand the beauty, delicacy and importance of nature. And understanding it gives us a chance of helping our nature-depleted planet and saving many of its wondrous species.
INTRODUCTION
by CHRIS PACKHAM, CBE
Naturalist, broadcaster, author and conservationist.
The fun thing is that it doesn’t matter which part of nature you love, because the natural world is all connected. For many of us, dinosaurs are a fascinating part of natural history. I’ve loved dinosaurs since I was young, and they’ve helped inspire me to become who I am today.
These brilliant books by Ben are the perfect introduction for every young (or not so young) palaeontologist or budding naturalist. Ben doesn’t just provide you with the most up-to-date, fascinating facts, he helps you fall in love with dinosaurs. And let’s be honest, who can fail to fall in love with these magnificent, prehistoric predators and huge herbivores?
HEY EVERYONE!
I need you to do a little experiment for me. It’s going to sound weird, but remember, weird is good. And anyway, none of us want to be normal. Normal is always less fun than weird. Okay, back to the experiment.
You’re going to need a playground. And as many of your classmates as you can find. The experiment happens over three days.
Day 1: go to the playground at lunchtime. Stand in the middle of the playground and close your eyes. Imagine you’re a wild animal, a lion or tiger maybe, and give me the biggest roar you can manage. Proper scary, loud enough to shake the glass in the windows and scare the birds from the trees.
Day 2: go back to the playground and do it again. The same as before. But this time, get as many people to join you as you can and roar together.
At this point in the experiment, I need to check something. Was there
