Chapter 1
Nathan
C ome on, man, you need a night out,
Jonathan said. You can’t keep working like this.
I looked at my boss and shook my head. I’m not in the mood.
I stacked another box of beer. I’m the operations manager for Giovanni Cellars, and I have I’d been working late for the last few weeks.
He watched me, while I stacked more cases, waiting, one eyebrow crooked.
Fine. Just one drink and then I’m going home. I’m not in the mood to go out.
He nodded and left the room.
I stared at the door as it closed behind Jonathan. Why did I agree to go out after work? I would have rather gone home to be alone. Sarah left six weeks ago, and I still couldn’t believe it. We were planning on getting married and then bam, she left me a Dear John letter with my ring, apparently, she met and fell in love with a guy who was in a band, and she was following him around the world.
I finished stacking the boxes, then went into the office to file the paperwork so the shipment could be wrapped and delivered. I made my way into the locker room, grabbed my jacket, clocked out, then headed to my truck. I waved to the night crew as I walked through the parking lot, then unlocked my truck and got in. After starting the truck, I sat there and closed my eyes.
Why am I going out? I just wanted to be left alone. But if I didn’t go, Jon would be all over me tomorrow. Better to just get it over with. One drink and then home.
As I drove towards my house, my thoughts drifted to Sarah, who I met when I was running on the beach. No, I don’t want to think about her, I need to forget about her. I decided to drive home and run to the Pub, I needed to work off this feeling and a good run would do it.
After changing clothes, I ran down the road to the stairs that lead to the beach. About two miles down the beach, then I ran to the boardwalk to cool down. I stopped outside the Pub and looked around. I saw Jonathan’s truck and his girlfriend’s car, so I knew they were already there.
One drink, that’s all I will have. I walk into the bar, waiting for my eyes to adjust to the low lighting, you can hear people cheering for some team that was on the TV and the band playing in the back room. I waved to Kole O’Shae, the owner of the Storybook Pub, and headed towards the room where they always sit.
I walked over and pulled out one of the chairs at the tables they had pushed together in the whiskey room. After saying hi to everyone, I got up and ordered a beer before sitting back down and talking sports with Jonathan and Thomas Anderson, the general manager of the Mill House where I work A
