image-placeholderShe sashayed through the room as she refilled drinks and kept appetizer trays full, but moved about virtually unnoticed. That was by all but me.
Her husband continued to chat with his friends, empty glass held loosely in the air, a subtle hint for her to stop and refill. Never once did he thank her throughout the night. He was completely oblivious to the beautiful creature he possessed. How he managed to land her, I had no clue, nor did I have an inkling as to why my focus was so set on her. Her cheerful demeanor, the way her dress ebbed and flowed with each sway of her delicate hips as it clung to her curves in all the right places. She was not only outwardly beautiful but was equally as gorgeous on the inside. Truly carved by one of the gods.
She glanced at me and smiled. One so genuine it took my breath away. My heart fluttered as she neared and it begged for the simplest of touches from her. Her billowy summer sundress brushed my bare leg and shot lightning bolts of tingles throughout me. But why? I was a hetero female. I’d never had such an urge toward another woman. Not to mention she was my friend, how dare I betray that friendship with lust-filled thoughts? What kind of person did that make me? What’s worse, there was no way my facial expressions didn’t betray me, airing my innermost thoughts.
Impure yet…tantalizing.
Mentally, I shook myself from this erotic trance, cursed the alcohol as though it were to blame, and returned to mingle with the group. I mean, for fuck’s sake, my husband was nearby chatting hers up. I glanced over, fearing they’d see it written all over my face, but they paid me no mind. Likely wrapped in some sort of sports commentary.
As I made my way through the crowd, I circled back around to the kitchen and there she was, busy assembling more appetizer trays. Did she ever stop to take a breath and enjoy her hard work?
Hey, Gemma, can I help with anything?
I sincerely hoped my voice didn’t come out as shaky as I was on the inside. Nerves? I’d never had an issue around her before, but I’d also never felt the urge to take her in my arms as I did then.
She winked. Grab that tray and load it up.
Gemma was the ultimate hostess, determined that no one left her house with an empty stomach and never had an empty glass in hand.
I kept busy behind the scenes as I helped refill serving platters and what not. I hadn’t expected there to be nearly forty people there, though I should’ve. Gemma and Ryker’s parties never disappointed the guests and the head count increased with each one. With all the people, many of which I had no clue who the hell they were, all in attendance for the free MMA fight, it was less of a struggle to keep busy and Gemma out of my line of sight.
Right, nice try, Liz. It was good in theory, but your execution needs more work.
Hey, brain, just because your sights are locked on her doesn’t mean I need to act on them. One of us needs to be an adult here.
As the fight neared the end, guests filed out one by one as they bid their farewells and thanked Gemma and Ryker for their hospitality. I collected the dishes and trash strewn about and returned to the kitchen to help finish cleaning up.
Thank you so much, Liz, you’re a huge help.
Gemma hugged me, though she’d likely slap me and kick me to the curb if she knew what being this close to her did to me. I hugged her and did my best to not press our bodies together, although I desperately wanted to feel her against me.
You’re welcome. I’m surprised more of the wives didn’t lend a helping hand.
I knew without asking they were all trophy wives of current and potential clients Ryker was trying to woo. I had to stop myself multiple times from asking to see their IDs.
Meh, it’s all good.
Even as Gemma replied, I sensed a weighted response she held onto.
Our husbands decided to shoot a game of pool in Ryker’s man cave, aka their game room, while Gemma and I stayed in the kitchen and sipped the lemon drop martinis she so graciously whipped us up.
So, how long have you and Tony been married?
Gemma took a seat on the stool beside mine as she asked. Her question jarred me, had we never spoke of anything personal before?
Four years this Halloween.
I wasn’t a big wedding kind of girl. The date was irrelevant to me. Besides, Tony was the one all gung-ho to get married. I was perfectly content just shacking up. God, that should’ve been a red flag.
Hindsight is always twenty-twenty, Liz.
Halloween? That’s got to be the coolest anniversary ever.
Gemma eyed me over her glass as she gauged my response. Was this some sort of test? What would I get if I passed?
I laughed. Yes, we’re both a little dark.
Mmm, I like dark.
Gemma hummed as her tongue darted out and licked the sugar from the rim while her free hand slid up my thigh.
My face heated. Was she fucking with me? Had she caught my wandering gaze earlier as I checked her out and thought it would be fun to push my buttons? I swallowed the last of my drink and did my best to tamp the arousal. How long have you and Ryker been married?
I managed to force the words past my lips.
She walked to the freezer, shaker in hand, and filled it with ice. We hit five years this past March. He was faithful for the first two.
Her response was so nonchalant as she mixed us another drink, I nearly missed it.
Umm, what?
I nearly choked on air. Did she just say that?
She blew me a kiss as she refilled my glass. So, Liz, what tickles your fancy?
I’m still trying to get past your last declaration.
I won’t lie, the first time it hurt like a son of a bitch, but what do you do? I don’t have a job, and with him I have access to unlimited funds, so I deal with it. He wants kids and I don’t, so it’s only a matter of time before he knocks up one of his playthings. Then I take half and move on.
Gemma’s eyes never left her glass as she mindlessly stirred the lemon wedge around. There
