PREFACE

Predicting the future trajectory of global events and economic trends has always been a challenge for many economists. This is because of the changing dynamics in the geopolitical sphere, governmental policies, and shifting societal beliefs and ideologies; all of which affect investment and consumption of goods and services, the main drivers of the global economy. The most difficult task of all is to build a common consensus, and disparities often occur even among the most diligent of economists.

Chinese astrology has been taught and used in predicting economic events based on the understanding of the 5 energy elements that control our planet’s geophysics, thereby affecting certain sectors of the economy due to the presence of favourable and unfavourable energies that rule a particular day, month, or year.

In 2022, both Evelyn and I launched our first book of the series, 2023 Water Rabbit Year: Astrology and Global Trends Forecast, in which many of the events and economic conditions that we jointly predicted have proven to be true, such as more rampaging fires being reported around the world, weakening economic conditions across many countries (EU and New Zealand just reported a recession while Pakistan, Egypt, Turkiye, and Argentina saw hyperinflation), more geopolitical tension and war, i.e., Taiwan Strait tension and prolonged war in Ukraine, and more rebellion against the governmental policies (UK, France, The Netherlands, Germany, etc.).

Our first collaboration laid the groundwork for us to publish this book, in which we aim to provide a glimpse of the future over the next five years based on Evelyn’s acute knowledge of Chinese astrology and my understanding of prevalent geopolitical, economic, and financial trends

that would exert themselves in the coming years—and the parallels are uncanny.

In this book, we specifically spent a tremendous amount of time to understand today’s technology trends and how they would play significant roles in altering the way we live our lives in the future. We also discuss potential pivotal events that could reshape the geopolitical landscape in the coming years and have wide ramifications for future generations.

Lastly, we included our perspective of which sectors of the economy would stand to benefit in the coming years based on our respective understanding of the 5 energy elements and global trends.

CHAPTER 1

PLANETARY MOVEMENT: EARTH'S CYCLES AND 5 ELEMENTS OF ENERGY

Chinese astrology is a study of cosmic energy that regulates the universe, heaven, earth, and man. This cosmic energy is derived from the 5 major planets (Jupiter, Mars, Saturn, Venus, and Mercury), which are visible from the earth and influence the gravitational force within the solar system. The 5 planets are manifested as the 5 basic elements of wood, fire, earth, metal, and water, each with its own attributes.

The 5 elements of energy govern time according to planetary movement. The planetary movements are cyclical, and Chinese astrology and Feng Shui cycles divide the earth time scale period into 9 periods of 20 years each according to the Yijing trigram, with its own element and period number, as shown in Figure 1.1. This coincides with an astronomical phenomenon known as the synodic cycle. Two of the biggest planets in the solar system, Saturn and Jupiter, align with each other every 20 years.

Each 3 periods forms a bigger cycle called yuan, where Periods 1-3 are the upper yuan; Periods 4-6 are the middle yuan; and Periods 7-9 are the lower yuan. One yuan is 180 years. The sub-yuan of 60 years is actually the 60 Jia Zi pillar, which the principle of bazi is based on. All these cycles in turn form another bigger cycle, from approximately 2,000 years up to 100,000 years. Saturn, Jupiter, and Mercury meet once every 180 years, and the nine planets will be on the same side of the sun, distributed in a small fan, forming nine stars in a row. Because this law of celestial bodies will never change, astronomers delineate the time system of three yuan and nine movements. According to this law, 180 years is taken as a positive yuan, and each positive yuan is divided into the upper, middle, and lower three yuan. Each yuan is 60 years, and each yuan is divided into three movements, that is, one to nine movements.

This is also in line with the study of long-term variation in earth orbit and axial tilt known as the Milankovitch cycles. It is believed that these variations are responsible for the cyclical changes in climate that occur over tens of thousands of years.

These cycles are named after the Serbian scientist Milutin Milankovitch, who first proposed the theory in the early 20th century.

There are three main types of Milankovitch cycles: eccentricity, axial tilt, and precession. Eccentricity refers to the shape of the Earth's orbit around the sun, which can vary from more circular to more elliptical over a period of about 100,000 years. Axial tilt refers to the angle at which the Earth's axis is tilted relative to the plane of its orbit, which can vary from about 22.1 to 24.5 degrees over a period of about 41,000 years. Precession refers to the gradual wobbling of the Earth's axis, which causes the direction of the North Pole to shift over a period of about 26,000 years.

Together, these cycles can affect the amount and distribution of solar radiation received by the Earth, which in turn can have a significant impact on global climate. For example, when the Earth's orbit is more elliptical and its axial tilt is greater, there is a greater difference in solar radiation received between summer and winter in the Northern Hemisphere, which can lead to more pronounced climate variations such as ice ages.

The world is undergoing rapid changes, and the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 has made geopolitical and economic energies more volatile. Currently, we are in Period 8 with the earth as its governing element from 2004 to 2023. During this time, real estate has become the dominant sector of the economy due to the earth’s era. Property prices have increased by 2 to 3 times their original prices.

However, the transition to Period 9, with fire as its governing element from 2024 to 2043, will bring a new set of challenges. The energy

transition began in December 2020, when Saturn and Jupiter were at their closest in hundreds of years, known as the ‘great conjunction’.

Transitioning between eras has historically been a difficult time, with events such as two world wars and the emergence of new diseases like HIV/AIDS and SARS. The current transition from Period 8 to 9 is one of the most volatile transitions, with the COVID-19 pandemic, wars, and geopolitical unrest. We will bid farewell to the 20 years of stable earth period in 2023, which marks the peak of the transition. The transition to the volatile fire energy of Period 9 will have a significant impact on the global economy.
