Aya and her younger sisters were born and raised in Beirut, Lebanon. Their mother and the girls fled Lebanon in 2004 to escape the war-torn country. After their mother developed a severe mental illness, the three girls faced years of abuse, neglect, and homelessness trying to survive on the streets of Washington, DC. Eventually the girls were taken into state custody, and Aya was separated from her sisters for over two years while spending most of her time in between foster homes. When she turned 15, Aya desperately wanted to be reunited with her sisters but knew it would take a miracle for someone to want to adopt 3 foreign preteen girls.

Introduction
At a very young age, my grandmother always taught me to never look at the beggars alongside the street and to always maintain a safe distance.
The streets of Beirut, Lebanon could be a very dangerous place for young girls, so it was very important that I kept my distance. As I walked closely alongside my mother, I couldn’t help but turn my face to look at them. The entire street was outlined with dismembered mothers with children crying and pleading for mercy. Pleading to me for mercy. A 9-year-old girl who had nothing that she could offer them. Despite being ‘unseen’ by everyone else, I have never forgotten their faces.
I have spent most of my life living in silence, afraid of what the world would think of me if they truly knew my story. Mine is a deep and complicated story about an ordinary girl who had lived an entire lifetime by the age of 28, feeling unseen for most of it. I have spent most of my life relentlessly pondering and searching for the truth. And it wasn’t until I finally found my truth that I realized the power it holds to set me free. Only by losing everything, was I able to gain everything.
My wish is that this story of my life would be a lighthouse to anyone who feels lost and confused, seeking peace and joy. Some may find one or the other, but rarely do people find both.
And by grace alone, I found both.
In the most unlikely of places, I learned that pain and suffering doesn’t have to end in vain. By surrendering my pain and allowing it to be a part of my healing journey, I finally saw my life transform in ways I never thought were possible.
I hope my story conveys that
