Master Your Focus Today - Phil Charles

    INTRODUCTION

Do you find it hard at times to focus? Do you know how focused you are? Do you want to increase your focus?

The day ends, and you've gotten things done, just not the important things. Without focus, we jump from task to task without actually accomplishing the important things.

Focus, put simply, is the single-minded determination to complete a task or action.

Taking action is the hardest part for many professionals.

You know or have a good idea of what you want to do, but the idea of getting started can tend to overwhelm you.

This book will provide you with practical suggestions to improve your focus–so let’s get started.

Technical professionals are most susceptible to distractions and have difficulty focusing. As a technical professional, I still have this challenge too. Our work often requires us to be constantly connected to the internet and email and be ready to answer the phone immediately. We are also constantly bombarded with notifications from our phones. And, let’s face it, social media can be a significant source of how we ‘waste’ our time.

However, distractions and a lack of focus can also arise from many situations in life. Sometimes, we might have too much on our plate, and an enormous pile of work can be overwhelming. Clutter and poor organization can also play a significant role in our lack of focus.

When attempting to balance work, home life, and our personal interests or needs, time can seem like it constantly escapes us. While we all have the same twenty-four hours in a day, there doesn’t seem to be enough time to accomplish all our goals.

When we struggle with our focus, other areas of our life can be affected too. For instance, if distractions stop you from completing your work on time, then when you go home (late after working long hours), you are distracted both in your home life and vice versa.

Determining the proper ways to master your focus will help you create the work-life balance you’ve always desired.

The truth is that staying focused is something that many people struggle with, not only technical professionals. Lack of focus can lead you to feel inadequate, which can cause a vicious cycle of avoidance behaviors and never reaching your goals.

I can say this because I was in a similar position in my life. Like many others, I didn’t have the proper work-life balance. I was constantly working too much but didn’t see the desired results.

In fact, I was barely getting by. I was constantly overwhelmed with work tasks, home tasks, and the important people in my life wanting and not getting my attention. All I could see was a growing list of projects to be completed.

Work was my primary focus, yet somehow, I wasn’t succeeding as I wanted. How could that be possible? I was spending over 60 hours a week working and still falling behind. It was as if my work was continuing to pile up, and my stress level continued to rise.

Something had to be done. My wife complained that she rarely saw me. When she did, I was tired and grumpy. My boss expressed concerns that my work wasn’t up to what was expected of me and that I was not meeting critical deadlines. I felt like I was slowly sinking under the constant pressure of work and letting everyone down.

Then one night, while driving home (late again), I dozed off when I stopped at a set of traffic lights. I patted my face to wake myself up, blinked my eyes, and started driving again. I dozed off again within a few minutes and scraped my wheel rims against the curb, and that woke me up. Luckily, I was okay, and my car only had a few scuff marks, but it really shook me up.

What if I fell asleep again? I could easily get into a more severe car crash and be seriously injured. What if others could have been hurt the next time, such as if my family or co-workers were in the car? That was when I decided it was time to change.

I enjoyed my work and the senior position I had achieved by working my way up the corporate ladder. However, I was stressed out and unhappy, my boss was disappointed, and my family wanted me to be around more. I was working on important, high-priority projects, and even while I wasn’t working at my full potential, my work was spoken of highly.

Maybe the job wasn’t the problem! So, I researched how to improve my focus to help me accomplish more. I realized we can’t manage time, and we all have the same hours in a day, but we can manage how we spend our time.

Step by step, I started implementing the new techniques I learned about. I had an entire team, so why not use them more? So I started delegating more. I created action plans and timelines for my projects with a step-by-step plan to keep me accountable, focused, and on track. And I blocked off time in my schedule to focus on personal goals.

I made sure not to take on more than I could accomplish, saying ‘no’ to less important tasks. I used my organizational skills and tried new scheduling techniques until I learned what worked best for me. This enable me to have more time to spend with my family, and slowly but surely, I saw my life begin to improve.

My team was completing more projects and was excited to take on more. We were more efficient, and the projects were getting done. My boss praised me for my improved results.

I took a vacation the following year, and when I returned to work, I didn’t feel overwhelmed or pressured by an immense amount of work. The vacation gave me a much-needed break to help me reach my goals and reduce my stress.

My boss and co-workers were more excited about my results and approach to work. My family was much happier with my new work-life balance and attitude. Sometimes, all it takes is to rework our thought process and plan our efforts better – it can make an enormous difference.

So how can you focus better and get more done?

The first step is understanding and identifying what your primary distractions are. This book will help you review and determine which distraction are your primary concerns, how they affect you and what you can do about it.

Once you understand your primary distractions, you can work on managing your distractions and developing a better focus. You can eliminate distractions, or at least minimize their impact, on your life in a way that is appropriate for your particular situation.

In this book, you’ll learn essential techniques for mastering your focus and managing your time more effectively with proper planning and prioritizing techniques. We’ll discuss action plans and how to create one specifically tailored to you and your concerns or goals.

This guide has a lot of information, but the bottom line is that technical professionals need to learn how to focus better to be productive, successful, and protect their future. We also have families and goals outside of our work.

By understanding your distractions and minimizing them, you can improve your focus and get more done, which will help you accomplish your long-term goals, regardless of what they might be.

No more feeling stressed—no more struggling with juggling too much. But don’t delay, or you will put your future career success at risk.

Learn how to pinpoint your distractions and master your focus today! In the next chapter, you will learn about what is focus.

    1 WHAT IS FOCUS?

No one can hit their target with their eyes closed. ~ Paulo Coelho

Simply put, focus is your attention. The situation, person, or task has your attention when you are focused. It’s the inability to place your attention on a specific task and avoid distractions that will ultimately hinder your efforts.

For example, as a technical professional, let’s say you have a report due for your latest work project. To complete it, you must be able to focus on the research, analysis, procedures, and other relevant information to compile the report. However, it would help if you could also avoid distractions that may arise, like fatigue, phone calls, emails, social media, or people in general.

Focus can be as intense or as laid-back as we are, and it usually correlates to your interest or the importance of the situation.

For instance, it might be easier for painters to focus on art than it would be for technical professionals. For technical professionals, it is easier to focus on understanding and solving problems than it would be for an artist.

Your daily focus intensity ranges. Unfortunately, even when a subject is interesting or a necessary part of your work, you can still lose focus.

    WHY IS FOCUS IMPORTANT?

Focus is important because it guides all your thinking activities, such as reasoning, learning, decision-making, perception, memory, completing tasks or work projects, and problem-solving. Your ability to think will suffer if you don’t have the proper techniques to focus.

If you struggle with focusing, you might notice your concentration centers
