    Episode 1 - John Klobucher

    1

From out of nowhere , through the late morning haze, a long silvery object fell from the sky and streaked across a vast expanse of low grassy dunes and smooth gray boulders. It crashed in a great plume of fire, smoke, and debris, skipping over the undulating land several times before skidding to a stop in a fresh, deep trench. The belly of the mangled spaceship was split wide open.

On a nearby pile of upturned soil, three figures lay motionless where they had been thrown violently from the wreckage. They were all clad in the same sleek flight suits and helmets, but two of them were badly charred and leaking blood. Their visors were cracked like egg shells.

An ear-piercing alarm suddenly sounded from within the burning ship as gases hissed out of the engine pod. The third crew member, whose suit appeared only slightly singed, stirred at the noise. Ensign Kel Stellix struggled to her knees and awkwardly reached for her helmet to lift its outer glare shield. She blinked hard to make sense of the blur before her.

    Captain? Harlie?

The air-tight helmet muffled the sound of her voice. The radio set she wore was pure static.

Too woozy to stand, Kel managed to crawl her way over the torn-up ground until she found the body of Captain Narum sprawled out in an unnatural pose. She knelt at his side and pressed her gloved hand to his chest. Captain... it’s Stellix, sir. Can you hear me? Please sir... She tried to lift his head. Please wake up. But she could tell that he was completely broken.

The ship emitted a loud, low rumble that shook the whole area like a tremor.

Just then Kel saw something move out of the corner of her eye and turned to see the navigator, Tash Harloc, curled up and twitching a few feet away. Kel stood up as best she could. Harlie, are you mobile? she shouted. We’ve got to move out of here. Pronto. The pressure in the pod is...

    Whoosh.

A blast of hot wind blew Kel off her feet, way back to the edge of the dune they had crashed on. She tumbled over the side and slid down a long sandy slope for what seemed like forever. She hit the bottom with a thud. Unh. Her helmet, which was dislodged during the fall, landed a few seconds later.

Kel held her breath and scrambled to snap it back on. But the sand had jammed the seal. Knowing that her respiration pack wouldn’t function without it, she threw the busted helmet down and squinted her dry, green eyes. Here goes nothing, she thought to herself. Then she took a big gulp of the alien air.

Kel coughed hard and reflexively clutched at her throat, but the feeling quickly passed. The atmosphere was breathable though thinner than she was used to. At least it wasn’t going to kill her — not immediately anyway.

Now the young ensign wasted no time climbing back up the dune to where her crewmates were. But just before she reached the top, a massive explosion sent a shower of molten metal down around her. She ducked as a huge shard flew over her head and smaller chunks peppered the landscape with fire.

My god, she shuddered. No no no... Kel clambered over the crest of the dune and
