      CHAPTER ONE

      RICHARD WAS A family friend. He had graciously taken me in when both of my parents passed away in an accident when I was eighteen. I was now twenty-two and I recently graduated from the state college with a degree in communications. I planned to be living on my own by now, but the job market was terrible. I had applied to over two-hundred jobs with no response. So, I had no other choice to stay with Richard, not that I really minded.

      He was an attractive single guy in his fifties and he was never married. He was tall and had salt-and-pepper hair. He was a veteran, and spent most of his young adult life in the army. He also owned a few businesses around town, so he was more well-off than one might assume. His military past was apparent in the way that he lived his daily life. He kept his nice house sparse and clean. He made his bed every morning, tucking in the sheets so tightly, it looked like nobody ever slept in it. Richard taught me the method and expected me to make my bed the same way each morning. If he ever glimpsed in my room and caught it slightly imperfect, he made his displeasure known.

      He woke up at 5:50am every morning and completed a series of exercises in the garage starting at 6:00am on the dot. When I was in college, I would occasionally join him when I was on a health kick. Now, the early morning exercise was mandatory for me. The day after I graduated, Richard sat me down for a talk at breakfast.

      Bella, you are now a full-grown adult and it’s time that you start acting like one. You will join me at oh-six-hundred every morning for a full exercise regimen. After you shower and eat breakfast, you will sit at this table and work on job applications for four hours. I don’t want you getting comfortable. Lethargy will not be tolerated. Things are going to be different around here going forward, he stated.

      Yes, sir, I answered, looking down at the table.

      I only do this because I care about you. I don’t want you turning out like your sister.

      Richard always thought that my parents were too soft with me and my older sister, Valerie. He voiced his displeasure to them when they stated that they did not believe in corporal punishment. Despite this, I turned out to be a relatively obedient kid, though my older sister did not. She was already in college living in dorms when my parents died, and remains to be quite a party girl. Valerie was always in and out of precarious relationships and living situations. Richard made it clear that things would be different with me in his household. I had to follow the rules, make my bed, and adhere to a meticulous chore chart. While I often resented his authoritarianism, I was quietly grateful for it. He was not going to
