Foreword
There can be no second opinion that Tamil Language is one of the ancient languages in the World. Though Tamils had been and are living in various parts of this World, the State of Tamil Nadu is considered primarily to be the soil of Tamil People.
From time immemorial great Saints, Scholars, Philosophers, Literary icons who born in Tamil Soil, had contributed a lot for the development of Tamil. It is not only the contribution towards the development of Tamil Language, but also for the Political, Socio and Economic development of the People of Tamil Nadu. Some of them, who lived in 19th and 20th century, had dedicated their entire life, in freedom struggle, for the country. Such great souls had not only contributed, but achieved a lot in the field of Arts, Music and Culture.
In order to take into the younger generation, the valuable contribution and their devoted life for the cause of development of the People at large who lived in Tamil Soil and to cherish the values of life, they taught to the Society and also to follow the footprints of such great personalities who have left indelible imprint in the chosen field, the Desiya Sinthanai Kazhagam (National Thinkers Forum, Tamil Nadu) has come forward to bring this small publication containing their life history and their remarkable contribution to the language and society, in nutshell, under the title ‘Pride of Tamil Nadu.’
From Saint Thiruvalluvar, who gave the unparalleled literary work of Sangam age Thirukkural
and the celebrity Poet Kavi Chakravarthy (Poetic Emperor), Kambar, the life history of these towering personalities and their immense contribution to the Tamil Society, have been traced in this Book.
It is an universally acclaimed fact that the Thirukkural
is one of the best treatise for the utility and guidance for everyone’s life at any point of time. Kavi Chakkravarthi Kambar penned more than 10,000 Poems in the epic called Kamba Ramayanam
, the complete story of Lord Rama. Ilango Adigal made the first great epic (Perunkappiyam) in Tamil Silappathikaram
which is one of the oldest Tamil Literary works through which, the Marathan history of Tamil Language beyond 2000 years could be traced.
In the front of music and arts, the trinity Saints of Carnatic Music, Thiruvalargal Shyama Shastri, Saint Thyagaraja and Muthuswamy Dikshitar, had contributed immensely and it is to be glorified forever.
Great work was done by Tamil Thatha (Tamil Grandfather), U.Ve.Swaminatha lyer, who brought the majority of Tamil Literary work of Sangam age from palm leaves into printing after underwent great pain and untold sufferings, but for him, the invaluable Tamil literary work like five Great Tamil Epics i.e., Silapathikaram, Manimegalai, Seevaga Sindhamani, Valayapathi and Kundalakesi, besides other literary work, would not have been made available for us.
In the later centuries, great people like Tamil Thendral Thiru. Vi.Kalyana Sundaranar, Desiyavinayagam Pillai, Lyricist Papnasam Sivan had immensely contributed for the Tamil Development in the field of Art and Literature. Desiya Kavi Subramania Bharathi was a towering personality from Tamil Soil in the 20th century, who, not only contributed, through his lyrics, to the Tamil language and society, but he had been in the forefront in the freedom struggle to kindle the patriotic fire of the people of Tamil Nadu by his revolutionary songs.
Of course, several other great personalities like, R.K.Narayan, a prolific writer, Periasamy Thooran, a Tamil Lover and Contributor, Kaviarasu Kannadasan, a contemporary Tamil literarian and lyricist, who lived in the later years of last century, have also been the icons, in their respective field, in Tamil Nadu.
In order to give a basic input about their life history and their achievement and contribution particularly to the Tamil Language and Tamil People and also to the country and to the mankind in general, the Sinthanai Kazhagam has taken this responsibility in the interest of the future society, as the history of these great souls should be known to every child, who born in this part of the world, to inherit the devotion, selflessness, social awareness, conscience and the love and affection towards the mother tongue Tamil and the mother India.
I am confident that the great work undertaken by the Sinthanai Kazhagam to bring this Book for the benefit of the Society would surely achieve the object of the Kazhagam in this regard. Let the effort made by the Desiya Sinthanai Kazhagam, in order to cherish the values of our Culture, Language and Patriotism, achieve its goal, for the better living and well being of every member of the Society.

KAMBAN
The Kavi Chakravarthy who spoke of social harmony through Ramayan and first to glorify Rama Nama
Kamban was a medieval Tamil poet and the author of the Tamil Ramayanam ‘Ramavatharam’, popularly known as ‘Kambaramayanam. He also authored other literary works in Tamil. He was a great scholar of India’s two ancient and rich languages, Sanskrit and Tamil. The Ramavataram or Kamba Ramayanam of Kamban is an epic of about 11,000 stanzas. Though Kamban followed the original story by Valmiki, he certainly did not choose to undertake a translation of the same. Being a scholar, he was perhaps aware that great and powerful empires and civilizations in the world have crumbled, when people indulged in excesses and deviated from the moral pathway. Being proud of the richness and antiquity of his language, he could not tolerate such a tragedy happening to his own people. Prompted by these considerations, Kamban thought it appropriate, it seems, to write a literary piece, which would improve the situation. This would give him ample scope to emphasize the excellence of virtuosity, chastity, brotherhood and the oneness of the Absolute Being. To accomplish this objective, he chose the story of Rama which was already very popular among Tamil people. Without changing the main story he was in a position to mould
