Description
In the process of planning Discover:surf I reached out to Vanessa Yeager. Vanessa is life long surfer who has such an incredible heart for inclusivity in the surf community, she is the founder of the Latinx surf community - a group of 2000+ Latin surfers and The Women Who Surf, the biggest surf community for women with over 20,000 women! Vanessa is a wife, a mom, a PE teacher with a heart for special needs, and is to the core everything you would imagine a surfer to embody. Vanessa and I connected over a shared passion for the water and a greater appreciation for everything the water represents. The ocean is a connecting force. Connecting land, connecting people, connecting stories, connecting body soul mind…
After talking for a few days on Instagram Vanessa told me just call her and we talked for an hour, connecting over how surfing has impacted us individually, how we both have a desire to create space for others who may not always be included. At the end of the conversation, I told Vanessa I was bummed I didn’t record the call because it really was one of the sweetest chats I have had with a pretty much complete stranger so she invited me to join her at the beach that weekend and record our conversation in her van. I love this because you’re going to hear motorcycles and people waiting at the van to say hi. If you listen closely you’ll hear the waves and if you put on your imagination cap you can just imagine that you’re right there with us!
