Description

Always Be My Maybe & Ali Wong: complicated with role reversals**Pick Me!: We provide a refresher on the criteria we use to pick our media: 1) must feature a complicated woman; 2) has to be written by or directed by a woman (this movie is a rare gem that passes on both) and apparently an unofficial third category that it has to be a version of When Harry Met Sally! (01:30)**Complicated Woman Rating. Sasha Tran, is she really complicated? Carinn isn’t feeling her inner conflict, but Kate is all in. (8:50)**The Grand Gesture Speech: Sasha. Breaking with traditional romcom structure, Sasha, the woman, makes the Big Speech first, telling Marcus while she loves him as he is, but that he needs to do the same and accept her life and her success. (18:02)**The Grand Gesture Speech: Marcus. After dealing with his own issues and personal growth, Marcus can profess his love to Sasha. He’s finally ready to “hold her purse.” Yet again, Carinn & Kate compare this to Harry and Sally and come out in different ways (21:46)**Hello Peril & Keanu Reeves: Kate loves any scene with Marcus’ band and Carinn can’t get enough of Keanu Reeves' meta performance. (25:55)**We play arm-chair therapist in What’s Your Damage, Heather? An homage to the iconic line in Winona Rider’s Heathers, we discuss how Sasha got to be the way she is. Clearly Sasha was neglected by her parents growing up; they were always working and leaving her alone. She can’t sit still, fills her life with awards, deals and unavailable men. But does she really deal with this and evolve by the end? (28:52)**We tell you What She Said, the segment where we share some of our favorite first person quotes from Ali Wong, comedian and co-writer of Always Be My Maybe.**Carinn and Kate crush hard on her stand-up comedy specials for Netflix, Baby Cobra and Hard Knock Life. (33:00)**Carinn loves Wong’s candid talks about sex and relationships in her stand-up, but especially appreciates her jokes about cultural identity. (34:41)**Kate loves Wong’s response to a question about how she deals with being a stand up comic who is Asian and also female: shift your perspective, use your differences to your advantage. She also loves her comedic bits on being the breadwinner in her marriage. (37:10)**Speaking of her marriage, Carinn shares a touching, thoughtful, and of course funny, message from Wong’s Instagram page to her husband, which Carinn thinks is the ultimate compliment (40:06)**Gaze into our Crystal Ball. As usual, Carinn’s creativity shines through, essentially writing Always Be My Maybe Part 2, with Marcus becoming a mess of a rock star paralyzed by fame during his Hello Peril stadium tour, only to be saved by Sasha who has now experienced some failure of her own. Kate foretells an even bigger cooking empire for Sasha, including a Food Network gig and a multi-book cookbook deal. (41:25)**Takeaway. Carinn values Sasha not as a complicated woman, but for showing the complicated woman’s fantasy. Kate muses on the trouble with being truly seen by another in a relationship before you see yourself clearly. Titles in the series (100)

In Pop Fiction Women we deep-dive into the complicated women of books, movies and TV shows, along with the women that bring them to life behind the scenes. Think Fleabag and Phoebe Waller Bridge, Normal People and Sally Rooney, and so much more. In each episode you can expect us to: * Break down the protagonist as we ask what makes her complicated? * Identify the best scenes, which can mean sweetest, funniest, or most badass. Anything we love. * Recount the cringiest scenes. The ones that make you squirm. Sometimes it’s self-sabotage, sometimes it’s growth, but it’s always part of the process of becoming our complicated selves. * Play arm-chair therapist in What’s Your Damage, Heather? An homage to the iconic line in Winona Rider’s Heathers, we discuss how these characters got to be the way they are. * “What She Said” - the segment where we scour every essay and interview with the women behind the scenes and share some of our favorite first person quotes. Real life is as interesting as fiction here. * Look into our crystal ball and ponder where these characters are six months later and five years later. Typically, Kate gets very real and Carinn gets buck wild. * Provide a takeaway, aka that part in the podcast where we try to sound deep. We leave you with some parting wisdom, challenge each other with thought-provoking questions inspired by the work, and urge you to “stay complicated.”
