I read a Doom novel when I was a kid. I remember it being the second one, but who knows, it could've just been that I was confused by the fact that the book had way, WAY more story than the game, at least story that I didn't immediately skip by when it came up on the screen (little did I realize that text was amazing, like some 60s Stan Lee bombastic shit!).

Anything that got me to read a book as a kid was obviously a cultural force to be reckoned with. Because reading was pure poison to me.
