it was amazing

5+
I am far from the first one to be blown away by this phenomenal book. How can one novel be heart-breaking, beautiful, amazing, poignant, and funny? Barbara Kingsolver lives in these mountains she writes about, this area of southern Appalachia that is a place of immense beauty but which is known more for its poverty, unemployment, and addiction. The Appalachian people, people who are often ridiculed for their rural ways and particular speech.“All down the years, words have been flung like pieces of shit, only to get stuck on a truck bumper with up-yours pride. Rednecks, moonshiners, ridgerunners, hicks, deplorables.”Kingsolver writes from the heart with love and understanding. She has written many fine books but, in my opinion, this is her best since The Poisonwood Bible.

Rather than retell the story (No! No! Please don’t!), I will share some of my favorite quotes. Please realize these are just a sampling of the many I might have included.

“The wonder is that you could start life with nothing, end up with nothing, and lose so much.”

“I wanted to go home, which was nowhere, but it’s a feeling you keep having, even after that’s no place anymore.”

“I’d live long enough to know shit doesn’t bounce off.”

“Certain pitiful souls around here see whiteness as their last asset that hasn’t been totaled or repossessed.”

“A junkie catches his flight. That sugar on your brain cells sucks away any other purpose. The human person you were gets yanked out through whatever hole the devil can find.”

“I thought about what Rose said, wanting to see the rest of us hurt, because she was hurting. You have to wonder how much of this whole world’s turning is fueled by that very fire.”

“That’s the deal of sober life: celebrate the fresh start, suck up your sadness for all that was left behind”.

I hope those who haven’t read this masterpiece will love it too.

I actually finished it about a month ago but am just ready to write the review. I loved it. Thanks for commenting, Mark.

Thanks, Nilton. Kingsolver is amazing, but a few of her more recent books have disappointed me.

Anne Barbara, so glad you loved this book. I did too.

Beata Fine review, Barbara! :)) My second novel by BK, and second winner, as for yourself. I've read a little about Appalachia, and seen some films too, and the novel gives the best feel of the region possible. Pity I don't have a print copy as I may have forgotten the quotes, thank you for them!

Barbara Anne wrote: "Barbara, so glad you loved this book. I did too."

Thanks, Anne. I know we all have different tastes in books, but I don't know how anyone could not like this, unless the sadness gets to them or maybe the length.

What other one have you read Beata? I think I have read most of her novels and one nonfiction. I appreciate your comment.

The Poisonwood Bible, Barbara, and want to read Unsheltered. I started the latter one but didn't finish, had to return it to the library. Hope to restart soon ..

Antoinette Great review, Barbara! Still on my TBR, but one I hope to get to this year.

Diane Barnes I'm so glad you liked it Barbara. I felt the same way about it, but it seems to have garnered a lot of detractors as well. I assigned it for my book club this month. Only 4 of the 8 finished the book and they all loved it. 2 didn't even attempt it, and 2 were still reading. I thought that was a good showing for such a long book.

Margaret M - (trying to catch up. It doesn't help that I am no longer getting notifications You can really feel the love for this one. So glad you enjoyed so much Barbara 💖

Linda Snow Fabulous review, Barbara! Just got this from my grandson for my birthday and can’t wait to read it. Thinking of suggesting it for book club, but they seem more into historical fiction.

Jenna ❤ ❀ ❤ I love your selection of quotes, Barbara, and I love that you loved this too! I agree with you that it's her best since Poisonwood Bible.

Violeta A gorgeous review, Barbara! And equally gorgeous quotes you shared here, thank you!
Especially the second one, about home being nowhere but still longing for this non-place…

The Appalachia and the ways of its people are unknown territory for me but you make a good case for the universality of this book.

I appreciate your kind words, Violeta. I have never been to Appalachia but have read and heard a lot about it. Other than its beauty, it has many problems. In some ways, it reminds me of Haiti -two places that can't seem to get a break.

I think you will also love it, Antoinette. Thanks for stopping by.

It seems like more than a few readers prefer short books and those that are more upbeat. It's disappointing that your book club didn't embrace it. I had the same experience with Penelope Fitzgerald's The Bookshop. 3 or 4 in my club were lukewarm about it and 1 hated it, said it was the saddest book she ever read. I loved it. I guess I am drawn to sad books. They reflect life so much more accurately. Thanks so much for commenting, Diane.

How lovely this wonderful book was a gift from your grandson! He must be a very intelligent young man. I hope your book club enjoys it if you do suggest it. Thanks so much for your kind words, Linda.

Kingsolver's last few books have disappointed me. Although her message is one a wholeheartedly agree with, I don't like preaching in a novel. I'm so glad her best is not in the past. Your review was everything I felt about this book and written so beautifully. I'm glad the quotes resonated. Thanks, as always, for your comment, Jenna.

I do agree that differing opinions are a great thing, Mark. They always make me see the book in a different way, and I often agree with some of the points. I will go back and reread your review. I always appreciate your comments.
