The event will take place from 25-27 September 2024, at the Costa Rica Convention Centre in San Jose. The Congress is being organised by the Costa Rican, Chillian, and Mexican Groups of the IABSE. The IABSE Congress is a premier international gathering that provides a platform for sharing knowledge, fostering collaboration, and discussing advancements in the field of structural engineering. Young Engineers Programme
Delegates born in 1990 or later will enjoy reduced registration fees. In addition a Young Engineers’ Contribution Award will be presented to two young authors, born in or after 1990, who have personally presented their paper during the Congress. The prize is sponsored by the IABSE Fellows and the Organising Committee. The award consist financial prize and a certificate, which will be presented during the closing ceremony.
Mentorship Opportunities: Pairing young engineers with seasoned professionals to provide guidance and support throughout the congress. This mentorship will continue beyond the event, offering ongoing professional development and career advice.
Interactive Workshops: Hands-on sessions designed to enhance practical skills and knowledge in specific areas of structural engineering. These workshops will cover a range of topics, from advanced modeling techniques to innovative design practices.

| Isabel Granada- Garcés, Colombia Head of IDB Operations in Costa Rica. | Eduardo Miranda, Mexico Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Stanford University He is the author of more than 100 peer-reviewed journal publications and recipient of several awards one of which is the Moisseff award from the American Society of Civil Engineering. Has served as an advisor in topics related to seismic instrumentation and seismic provisions for the United States Geological Survey, California Strong Motion Instrumentation Program, the U.S. National Standard and Technology, the U.S. Federal Emergency Management Agency and the World Bank. | Roberto T. Leon, USA David H. Burrows Professor at Virginia Tech Leon is the David H. | Olga Marín Cardona, Colombia Civil Engineer, MSc., PE, M. ASCE CEO and Co-founder of Tafur Marín Ingeniería Estructural SAS, re-elected member of the ASCE International Region Board of Directors With extensive experience in seismic analysis, vulnerability assessment, design and repair of structures in high seismic risk areas. Proven experience in project management and leadership roles. Pre-Congress Workshop
FORENSIC ENGINEERING WORKSHOP Structural Failures – Investigations, Causes, Lessons Learned and used to Mitigate Failures
Venue: CFIA, San Jose, Costa Rica The workshop will close with a “working session” in which the attendees will debate the reports, causes, responsibilities and lessons from selected cases of actual failures – the reports will have been sent to registrants for review ahead of the workshop. Reference material: Each attendee will receive a bound volume of documents that will include PDFs of over 400 PowerPoint slides of the speakers’ presentations, and reprints of several journal articles for references. Register for the Pre-Congress Workshop here | Target audience: The workshop is aimed at a range of structural engineers: young, mid‐career and experienced who want to acquire better understanding of failures towards improving their design, inspection, construction, administrative and other project‐related practices to avoid pitfalls that may lead to failures. It is also informative to those wanting to acquire a working knowledge of, and embark on, the challenging and rewarding professional practice of forensic structural engineering. The primary objective of the workshop is to provide understanding of the origins, causes and consequences of failures, the lessons learned from them, and thereby to improve design practices and elevate the standard‐of‐care – all to mitigate errors that may lead to failures and liabilities of engineers.
