Project Description

A mutual fund company requested datasets and calls with IDC experts to determine the potential impact of EU antitrust regulations on Google. The client has a position in Google in their investment portfolio.

IDC provided the following datasets to help the client answer the question including Google Android’s installed base by country, Android OS shipments and value (e.g. KitKat, Lollipop, Marshmallow, Nougat) with country splits, Android based smartphone market share by vendor with country splits, and Android market share projections in the EU and UK over the next five years.

Hedge Fund

Objective:

Update market model and projections for hard disk drives (HDDs) and solid state drives (SSDs)

Project Description

A hedge fund regularly uses IDC data to update their market model on HDDs and SSDs which includes suppliers such as Seagate, Samsung, Toshiba, and Western Digital. The client has multiple positions in this market in their investment portfolio.

The client receives off the shelf worldwide quarterly unit and petabyte shipments and revenue for the HDD industry, including supplier unit shipment and revenue market share and quarterly unit shipments, revenue, and capacity shipped for SSDs. Additionally, the client receives custom data on form factor, Terabytes, ASPs, $/GB, interface, etc.

The client also regularly utilizes the HDD and SSD analysts for inquiry calls for a dialogue on market dynamics, trends, and company news.

Private Equity

Objective:

Determine historical and projected trends of IBM z systems and Power Systems

Project Description

IDC assisted a private equity firm with gathering research on IBM z systems and Power Systems including competitive positioning, historical unit shipments, annual revenue of new sales, and installed base for a potential software deal. The client also requested primers on the server market and several calls with IDC experts.

The client's objective was to determine the short and long-term stability of the current IBM mainframe installed base and the factors keeping the installed base in place as well as the threat from other servers (e.g. x86, hyperscalers).

Financial modeling for Samsung

Project Description

A mobile devices research group creates revenue projections for Samsung and needs market sizing data for the entire mobile sector.

The group gathers relevant IDC forecast and market share reports for trend data to incorporate into their primer and confirms their hypothesis with an advisory call with top IDC industry analysts.

Investment Bank (Banking)

Objective:

Determine market potential for an Initial Public Offering (IPO) for an emerging technology company

Project Description

An investment banking group in the process of bringing a new company to the public markets needed updated market sizing data across several adjacent markets.

The group prepared custom analyses and relevant market share reports to validate product positioning statements for regulatory market filings.

Conducted several insights calls in Identity Access Management, Unified Communications and Collaborative market to provide details on changes with pricing models and potential impacts on emerging solutions.

Custom Project

Objective:

Create total cost of ownership model for enterprise storage company

Project Description

IDC’s Storage Team provided insight into an enterprise storage solutions company's (Project Y) competitive offering in the market as part of a due diligence process for an investment bank in support of an investment opportunity.

The IDC team developed 5 custom TCO models to compare Project Y’s offering against 5 competitive vendors forecasting over a 3-year timeframe. Final deliverable included a post-project debriefing with the analyst team.
