Al Pacino skipped over quite a few steps before announcing Oppenheimer as the best picture winner at the Oscars 2024.
The actor took the stage at the awards ceremony to present the top prize of the night. As is tradition, announcers usually name all of the nominees before announcing who will be taking home the award.
Instead of announcing the nominees — which also included American Fiction, Anatomy of a Fall,
Barbie, The Holdovers, Killers of the Flower Moon, Maestro, Past Lives, Poor Things and The Zone of Interest — he opened the envelope and said, “My eyes see Oppenheimer.”
Not including the recount of all the films up for best picture takes away some of the suspense of the award, as well as the projects’ final chance to get the recognition they deserve for being nominated for the highest honor in Hollywood.

While there are plenty of movies to catch up with during the holiday break, I recommend you make time for The Holdovers. The Alexander Payne-directed comedic drama stars Paul Giamatti in one of his most outstanding roles, with Da’Vine Joy Randolph and Dominic Sessa in his feature film debut. The Holdovers is already available on PVOD, but it’s coming to Peacock on December 29.
Some people enjoy spending holidays alone, but for others, it’s a painful reminder of having no one else to share the merriment and make new memories. In Alexander Payne’s The Holdovers, Paul Giamatti’s Paul Hunham learns the value of opening his heart to a troubled student during a lonely Christmas break. The feature marks a welcomed return for Payne, whose previous directorial effort was for the social satire Downsizing, starring Matt Damon, Christoph Waltz, and Hong Chau.
Here is the official synopsis for The Holdovers,...

As we head into the final two months of the year, there are still a number of Oscar contenders that won’t be released — or even be seen — until December.
Tim Burton’s Big Eyes, Angelina Jolie’s Unbroken and Rob Marshall’s Into the Woods will premiere on Christmas Day. Clint Eastwood’s American Sniper will have a limited release on Christmas before expanding to more theaters Jan 16.
Exodus: Gods and Kings, which is set for a Dec. 12 release, had a 37-minute press screening in September before the film was completed.
It was recently announced that a 30-minute first-look screening of Selma, the Martin Luther King Jr. biopic that centers on the Civil Rights marches from Selma to Montgomery, will take place at AFI Fest before its limited release on Dec. 25. But if Selma isn’t yet ready for it’s December release, it...

Weekly Column: Just when it looked as though the Missing Malaysian Airliner story was running out of gas, officials announced this morning that French satellites have grabbed images of more than 100 “potential objects” from Flight 370 in the southern Indian Ocean about 1,500 miles off the coast from Perth, Australia, giving CNN fresh material with which to hang on to the story for dear life. The maybe-debris, which was scattered over 154 square miles — roughly the size of Denver – ranges in length from 3 to 72 feet which, some CNN pundits noted, is about the length of a wing on the Boeing 777 that disappeared March 8 as it was heading from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing with 239 on board. Reporters Who Cover Television, and Columnists Who Want In On The Web Traffic, who in the preceding three weeks had exhausted their repertoire of derisive comments about CNN’s flood-the-zone coverage of the missing plane, spent the day looking haggard and care-worn,...

Over the last decade, car driving games have exploded in popularity thanks to the success of the PlayStation and Xbox gaming consoles. This console success has now translated into hundreds, if not thousands, of games now available to buy on your iPhone direct from the app store as many developers cotton on to the trend.
But with so many games all vying for your 69p (or more!), and plenty of sites such as CarGames.org.uk offering them for free, which of the iPhone games are actually worth paying for?
We run down the top 5 car games for your iPhone to help you decide.
Parking Frenzy 2
Although not a particularly in-depth game, with relatively short levels, Parking Frenzy 2 offers a challenging experience for even the most advanced virtual parkers out there.

To help prevent pedestrian accidents, otherwise silent electric cars must emit a noise while they drive. What noise? It's up to carmakers. Ford has presented us with some potential options. Behold, the sweet, sweet music of the Spaceship engine.
One of the benefits of electric cars--besides not using any gas--is that they are basically silent, clearing up a lot of the noise pollution inherent in driving giant hulks of metal around everywhere. But there is a problem: blind people use the sound of cars as a warning to not walk into streets. The roar of traffic acts as a safety cue to others, as well: People wearing headphones, little kids, the hard of hearing, smartphone addicts, or simply those not paying attention. When cars are silent, this warning system is gone, and it's a lot easier to accidentally get mowed down. For this reason, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration...

Complaining about award show nominees is as fruitless and Sisyphean as whining about traffic, or the inaccurate annual nominations of the Academy of Traffic Arts & Sciences’ Traffic Awards (the Traffies), but now that I’ve mindlessly spouted that disclaimer, I will proceed to whine about today’s Golden Globe nominees and get mad about an oversight in one category by ripping on random stupid things in other categories, which isn’t how things work but who cares because it’s easy. The one gripe I have with the list of nominees, which overshadows every other possible oversight, is that Breaking Bad did not get nominated for Best Television Series – Drama. These 5 shows did: Not a bad list, but this is the third straight year that Breaking Bad — which will, when all is said and done, go down as one of the best shows ever to air on television — hasn’t...

"Made in Dagenham" is based on the true story about working class women fighting for equal pay with "one foot in the kitchen, one foot on the factory floor" in 1960's England. One of those feel good equal rights flicks with lots of empowering dick jokes that I'd probably never go and see -- but it has a killer soundtrack.
Among the 17 tracks that inspire the working girls, lead by Sally Hawkins, to stick it to the man are oldies by James Brown, The Kinks, Small Faces, Dusty Springfield, The Troggs, and reggae genius Desmond Dekker. Not all of these appear to have made it into the film (comparing it to the press release from Sony Pictures reveals at least 6 tracks not in the film) and The Playlist points out that the album notes that it "features music from and inspired by the film." Well, whatever works. Have a listen...

On Tuesday, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame unveiled the nominees for induction in 2011, a list that's as inspiring (Beastie Boys! Tom Waits! Dr. John!) as it is mystifying (LL Cool J?).
Not surprisingly, this year's noms sparked a whole lot of debate — because kvetching about the Rock Hall is an exercise as old as the Hall itself — and for most of the day, I was ready to lend my voice to the argument. After all, any Hall of Fame that does not include among its ranks the likes of Kiss, Rush, Cheap Trick or Def Leppard (or even Joy Division, the Replacements, Hüsker Dü,...
