Now a days, transfer learning is used heavily in the NLP and Computer vision problems. It can be applied by using model weights as it is for some task like classification, NER, IR. or models weights can be update for domain specific adaption using fine tuning approach. It reduce a lot of burden for training a model from scratch and also lots of computation efforts are reduced using this approach. however, base models have some shortcomings in terms or data biases and large size of model which can impact inference time and hardware requirements to deploy any model for production.

Two advices: 1. There is no perfect single metric. Even if you want to foucs on, e.g., the F1-Score, you'd still want to check other metrics, such as Precision, Recall or AUROC. 2. We need these models' creators & users to collaborate to identify & mitigate biases proactively.
