1 | The Purchasing Power Parity (PPP) exchange rate is calculated by determining the amount of national currency required to purchase a given basket of goods and services in each of two countries and then taking the ratio of the two amounts. The PPP exchange rate has the advantage over the market exchange rate (i.e., the rate of exchange between two currencies in currency markets) that it reflects the amount of goods and services that an individual can purchase with a given amount of money in each country. When incomes expressed in national currencies are compared using a PPP exchange rate, a better measure of relative living standards is obtained (Paul and Francette 2002).
