The potential of electric vehicles (EVs) to support the decarbonization of the transportation sector, crucial for meeting greenhouse gas reduction targets under the Paris Agreement, is obvious. Despite their advantages, the adoption of electric vehicles faces limitations, particularly those related to battery range and charging times, which significantly impact the time needed for a trip compared to their combustion engine counterparts. However, recent improvements in fast charging technology have enhanced these aspects, making EVs more suitable for both daily and long-distance trips. EVs can now deal with long trips, with travel times only slightly longer than those of internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles. Fast charging capabilities and infrastructure, such as 350 kW chargers, are essential for making EV travel times comparable to ICE vehicles, with brief stops every 2–3 h. Additionally, EVs help reduce noise pollution in urban areas, especially in noise-saturated environments, contributing to an overall decrease in urban sound levels. However, this research highlights a downside of DC (Direct Current) fast charging stations: high-frequency noise emissions during fast charging, which can disturb nearby residents, especially in urban and residential areas. This noise, a result of the growing fast charging infrastructure, has led to complaints and even operational restrictions for some charging stations. Noise-related disturbances are a significant urban issue. The World Health Organization identifies noise as a key contributor to health burdens in Europe, even when noise annoyance is subjective, influenced by individual factors like sensitivity, genetics, and lifestyle, as well as by the specific environment. This paper analyzes the sound emission of a broad sample of DC fast charging stations from leading EU market brands. The goal is to provide tools that assist manufacturers, installers, and operators of rapid charging stations in mitigating the aforementioned sound emissions in order to align these infrastructures with Sustainable Development Goals 3 and 11 adopted by all United Nations Member States in 2015. Changes in RNA Splicing: A New Paradigm of Transcriptional Responses to Probiotic Action in the Mammalian Brain

Elucidating the gene regulatory mechanisms underlying the gut–brain axis is critical for uncovering novel gut–brain interaction pathways and developing therapeutic strategies for gut bacteria-associated neurological disorders. Most studies have primarily investigated how gut bacteria modulate host epigenetics and gene expression; their impact on host alternative splicing, particularly in the brain, remains largely unexplored. Here, we investigated the effects of the gut-associated probiotic Lacidofil® on alternative splicing across 10 regions of the rat brain using published RNA-sequencing data. The Lacidofil® altogether altered 2941 differential splicing events, predominantly, skipped exon (SE) and mutually exclusive exon (MXE) events. Protein–protein interactions and a KEGG analysis of differentially spliced genes (DSGs) revealed consistent enrichment in the spliceosome and vesicle transport complexes, as well as in pathways related to neurodegenerative diseases, synaptic function and plasticity, and substance addiction across brain regions. Using the PsyGeNET platform, we found that DSGs from the locus coeruleus (LConly), medial preoptic area (mPOA), and ventral dentate gyrus (venDG) were enriched in depression-associated or schizophrenia-associated genes. Notably, we highlight the App gene, where Lacidofil® precisely regulated the splicing of two exons causally involved in amyloid β protein-based neurodegenerative diseases. Although the splicing factors exhibited both splicing plasticity and expression plasticity in response to Lacidofil®, the overlap between DSGs and differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in most brain regions was rather low. Current global conditions and challenges in industrial manufacturing, marked by dynamism, competition, and the need for responsible resource management, have increased the demand for sustainable manufacturing practices. The integration of Industry 4.0 and the recent development of Industry 5.0 have added dynamism, which has generated profound implications for quality control and process monitoring, focusing mainly on recognising control patterns within the manufacturing environment. This study introduces a novel methodology for evaluating the performance of pattern classification models used in advanced quality control. Our approach incorporates robust performance metrics, early detection, window size, network hyperparameters, and concurrent patterns within a simulated monitoring environment. Unlike previous research, our evaluation methodology addresses the sensitivity of classification models to various factors, emphasising the critical balance between early detection and minimising false alarms. The findings reveal that window size significantly impacts the model’s sensitivity to pattern changes, highlighting that measuring early detection alone is impractical in real-world applications. Furthermore, optimal hyperparameter selection enhances the model’s practical applicability. Full article

Background: This study aims to evaluate the impact of various weighting factors (WFs) on the quality of weighted average (WA) dual-energy computed tomography (DECT) non-contrast brain images and to determine the optimal WF value. Because they simulate standard CT images, 0.4-WA reconstructions are routinely used. Methods: In the initial phase of the research, quantitative and qualitative analyses of WA DECT images of an anthropomorphic head phantom, utilizing WFs ranging from 0 to 1 in 0.1 increments, were conducted. Based on the phantom study findings, WFs of 0.4, 0.6, and 0.8 were chosen for patient analyses, which were identically carried out on 85 patients who underwent non-contrast head DECT. Three radiologists performed subjective phantom and patient analyses. Results: Quantitative phantom image analysis revealed the best gray-to-white matter contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) at the highest WFs and minimal noise artifacts at the lowest WF values. However, the WA reconstructions were deemed non-diagnostic by all three readers. Two readers found 0.6-WA patient reconstructions significantly superior to 0.4-WA images (p < 0.001), while reader 1 found them to be equally good (p = 0.871). All readers agreed that 0.8-WA images exhibited the lowest image quality. Conclusions: In conclusion, 0.6-WA reconstructions demonstrated superior image quality over 0.4-WA and are recommended for routine non-contrast brain DECT. Full article

The Qinling Mountains, known for high forest cover and multiple ecosystem services (ES), present significant potential for advancing ecological management (EM) paradigms. However, existing studies on matching long-term ES sequences with governance units remain limited. By quantifying the assemblage and clustering patterns of ecosystems in the Qinling Mountains over forty years, this study was innovative in analyzing changes in long-term ecosystem interactions and the impact of spatialization drivers, enhancing the significance of administrative-scale adaptations for sustained conservation and EM strategies. The results showed an increasing trend in the multiple ES Landscape Index (MESLI) since 2000. Spatialized trend analysis showed that the MESLI increased by 58.8% in the east. Moreover, the potential of ES bundles (ESB) in matching ecological management scales was demonstrated. Three ESBs were identified at different administrative levels and townships were more responsive to ESB changes. The composite ESB 1 dominated at 50.2%, and ESB 2 exhibited an upward trend. Additionally, spatial analysis of long-term drivers revealed the underlying causes of local ES degradation. Climate change had region-wide impacts, while natural and anthropogenic factors contributed to localized degradation. These findings emphasize the critical role of spatiotemporal analysis in shaping township-level EM strategies in multi-ES regions, providing feasible guidance for accurately enhancing localized management. It is widely recognised that addressing inequality in tertiary education is a complex and multifaceted issue. Studies involving students from lower socio-economic backgrounds consistently show that educational disparities exist at the post-secondary education level, with these students’ encountering obstacles in both accessing and completing tertiary education compared to their wealthier counterparts. Understanding how widening participation interventions may influence young people’s post-compulsory education is an important part of addressing the participation gap. This paper investigates longitudinal data from 227 students in Dublin, Ireland, who were attending post-primary schools located in areas that have low progression to tertiary education. The paper examines the extent to which students’ post-secondary plans, formulated in their final year of secondary school, are realised six months after graduation. The paper continues to examine the influence of external interventions provided by an Irish university’s widening participation (WP) programme on secondary school students’ progression to post-compulsory education. Taking into account contextual factors (e.g., gender, ethnicity, school type, parental education, parental support), this paper examines how WP programmes in secondary school impact post-school progression. Programme engagement (guidance outreach activities) was associated with 4.91-greater odds of post-secondary education once other contextual factors had been controlled for. Participating in mentoring programmes did not have a significant influence on post-secondary progression. Findings in relation to these are discussed, and recommendations for how practitioners and policy makers can approach widening participation outreach programmes with secondary school students are highlighted. Calorie information is often provided on food packaging and is a legal requirement in many countries. There is some evidence to suggest that attention to calorie counting can have a detrimental effect on those with eating disorders (EDs). The aim of this review is to summarise current research relating to the impact of restaurant menu calorie labelling on people with EDs. A search was carried out using the CINAHL Complete and Medline databases. Ten papers were included in the final review. Recent statistics show that the incidence of EDs is increasing. These studies assessed the impact of calorie information on people with EDs. Policies, such as calorie labelling on restaurant menus, could be a contributing factor. Studies exploring the effect the policy has had on obesity levels have not demonstrated a significant positive impact on reducing calorie intake. Qualitative studies conducted in England show the extent to which people with EDs are affected. Much of the data from the transcripts highlighted the negative thoughts that this policy has evoked. A review of the literature has demonstrated that this policy has had a negative impact on people with EDs and little benefit for those with obesity, who may also experience EDs. Full article

Competitive intelligence (CI) is a critical tool for startups, enabling informed decision making through the systematic gathering and analysis of relevant information. This study aims to identify and prioritize the key factors influencing CI in startups, providing actionable insights for entrepreneurs, educators, and support organizations. Through a systematic literature review, key variables and components impacting competitive intelligence were identified. Two surveys were conducted to refine these components. The first employed a five-point Likert scale to evaluate the significance of each component, while the second used a pairwise comparison approach involving ten experts in CI and startup mentorship. Utilizing the fuzzy Analytical Network Process (ANP), this study ranked Technology Intelligence as the most critical factor, followed by market and Strategic Intelligence. Competitor Intelligence and Internet intelligence were deemed moderately important, while Organizational Intelligence ranked lowest. These findings emphasize the importance of technology-driven insights and market awareness in fostering startups’ competitive advantage and informed decision making. This study provides a structured framework to guide startups in prioritizing CI efforts, offering practical strategies for navigating dynamic market conditions and achieving long-term success. Understanding the dynamic relationships between geoenvironmental factors and forest vegetation cover is crucial for effective forest management and planning. This study investigates the spatiotemporal dynamics of forest cover in the Duhok District in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq over a decade (2013–2023), emphasizing the impact of geoenvironmental factors via Random Forest algorithms and Landsat data. This research integrates datasets including fractional vegetation cover (FVC), groundwater levels, climate data, topography, and soil moisture data, offering a comprehensive analysis of the factors influencing forest cover. The results show that in 2013, altitude and rainfall were the primary factors influencing FVC, with areas of higher altitudes and adequate rainfall exhibiting up to 30% denser forest cover. By 2023, soil moisture and groundwater levels had emerged as the dominant factors, with soil moisture levels accounting for 25% of the variation in FVC. This shift underscores the increasing importance of water management strategies to maintain forest health. The Random Forest model demonstrated high predictive accuracy, achieving an R2 value of 0.918 (RMSE of 0.016 and MAE of 0.013) for 2013 and 0.916 (RMSE of 0.018 and MAE of 0.014) for 2023, underscoring the model’s robustness in handling nonlinear ecological processes. This study’s insights are crucial for guiding sustainable forest management practices and assisting decision-makers in formulating strategies for resource management, environmental preservation, and future planning. This study underscores the necessity of adaptive management strategies that consider evolving climatic and hydrological conditions, emphasizing continuous monitoring and advanced technologies to ensure the resilience of forest ecosystems. Synergy of Remote Sensing and Geospatial Technologies to Advance Sustainable Development Goals for Future Coastal Urbanization and Environmental Challenges in a Riverine Megacity

Riverine coastal megacities, particularly in semi-arid South Asian regions, face escalating environmental challenges due to rapid urbanization and climate change. While previous studies have examined urban growth patterns or environmental impacts independently, there remains a critical gap in understanding the integrated impacts of land use/land cover (LULC) changes on both ecosystem vulnerability and sustainable development achievements. This study addresses this gap through an innovative integration of multitemporal Landsat imagery (5, 7, and 8), SRTM-DEM, historical land use maps, and population data using the MOLUSCE plugin with cellular automata–artificial neural networks (CA-ANN) modelling to monitor LULC changes over three decades (1990–2020) and project future changes for 2025, 2030, and 2035, supporting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Karachi, southern Pakistan, one of the world’s most populous megacities. The framework integrates LULC analysis with SDG metrics, achieving an overall accuracy greater than 97%, with user and producer accuracies above 77% and a Kappa coefficient approaching 1, demonstrating a high level of agreement. Results revealed significant urban expansion from 13.4% to 23.7% of the total area between 1990 and 2020, with concurrent reductions in vegetation cover, water bodies, and wetlands. Erosion along the riverbank has caused the Malir River’s area to decrease from 17.19 to 5.07 km2 by 2020, highlighting a key factor contributing to urban flooding during the monsoon season. Flood risk projections indicate that urbanized areas will be most affected, with 66.65% potentially inundated by 2035. This study’s innovative contribution lies in quantifying SDG achievements, showing varied progress: 26% for SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure), 18% for SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), 13% for SDG 13 (Climate Action), and 16% for SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth). However, declining vegetation cover and water bodies pose challenges for SDG 15 (Life on Land) and SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), with 16% and 11%, respectively. This integrated approach provides valuable insights for urban planners, offering a novel framework for adaptive urban planning strategies and advancing sustainable practices in similar stressed megacity regions. This study investigates the impact of spatial changes over a 400-year period on the summer microclimate of a residential courtyard in China. Using ENVI-met simulations, we analyze how factors such as courtyard orientation, building height, and opening positions affect the thermal environment. The results show that east–west-oriented courtyards experienced 0.2–0.4 °C lower daytime temperatures compared to north–south ones. Additionally, taller surrounding buildings increased the courtyard’s average daytime temperature by approximately 0.3–0.5 °C, while courtyards with a single opening facing the prevailing wind maintained the lowest temperatures. These findings underscore the importance of historical spatial characteristics in shaping microclimates and offer key insights for contemporary urban planning. By incorporating design strategies based on these historical spatial features, such as optimizing courtyard orientation, enhancing building height variability, and creating appropriate openings for natural ventilation, urban planners can improve microclimate conditions, reduce reliance on mechanical cooling, and enhance energy efficiency. This approach not only contributes to lowering carbon emissions but also boosts resilience to extreme heat events in urban areas, especially in regions facing rapid urbanization and climate change challenges. With rapid advancements in unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) technology, its integration into logistics operations has emerged as a promising solution for improving efficiency and sustainability. Among the emerging solutions, a collaborative delivery model involving drones and trucks addresses last-mile delivery challenges by leveraging the complementary strengths of both modes of transport. However, evaluating the environmental and economic impacts of this transportation mode requires a systematic framework to capture its unique characteristics and minimize environmental impacts and costs. This paper investigates the Parallel Drone Scheduling Traveling Salesman Problem (PDSTSP) to evaluate the environmental and economic sustainability of a collaborative drone-truck delivery system. Specifically, a mathematical model for this delivery system is developed to optimize joint delivery operations. Environmental impacts are assessed using a comprehensive Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), including emissions and operational noise, while a Life Cycle Cost Analysis (LCCA) quantifies economic performance across five cost dimensions. Sensitivity analysis explores factors such as delivery density, traffic congestion, and wind conditions. Results show that, compared to the electric vehicle fleet, the proposed model achieves an approximate 20% reduction in carbon emissions, while delivering a 20–30% cost reduction relative to the fuel truck fleet. Drones’ efficiency in short-distance deliveries alleviates trucks’ load, cutting environmental and operational costs. This study offers practical insights and recommendations for implementing drone-truck parallel delivery systems, particularly in high-demand density areas. Full article

Exploring the factors driving farmers’ crop rotation intention and behavior can provide a scientific foundation for enhancing crop rotation policies. Utilizing 448 micro-research samples from three counties in Heilongjiang Province, a structural equation model was developed to examine the factors influencing farmers’ crop rotation intention and behavior. This analysis focused on farmer cognition, family endowment, and the external environment. The study results indicate that farmer cognition and family endowment positively impact their intention to rotate. The rotation intention, in turn, is a crucial driver of actual rotation behavior. However, the external environment tends to affect rotational behavior negatively. Then, positive effects were noted, and factors such as the benefits of crop rotation, policy awareness, social support, larger cropland area, narrower return, the profit gap between maize and soybean, lower spatial connectivity standard, and higher crop rotation subsidy standard significantly encourage farmers’ crop rotation intention and behavior. In a nutshell, to effectively promote the area of rotation, it is crucial to enhance policy communication, target subsidy to larger households, and establish differentiated subsidy standards. These measures are essential to boosting farmers’ motivation and increasing the adoption of crop rotation in the region. Full article

The incidence and prevalence of chronic kidney disease (CKD) are increasing worldwide. CKD is associated with high morbidity, premature mortality, and high healthcare costs. Genetic variants may influence CKD development and progression. This study aimed to identify the associations between allelic variants and CKD progression. We performed a systematic literature review following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. The PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Central databases were used for data collection. Hereditary causes of CKD were excluded from the analysis. A total of 38 reports were included. The selected studies included cohort studies, case-control studies, and genome-wide association studies (GWASs). The studies involved patients of different ethnicities and with comorbid diseases. Several genetic variants were identified in genes that encode proteins related to metabolic processes, oxidative stress, immune regulation, the renin–angiotensin–aldosterone pathway, and epigenetics, among others. These genetic alterations can affect protein function and lead to renal damage, impacting CKD development and progression. Gene polymorphisms can influence CKD progression. Many of these are population-specific, and their relevance may be influenced by the presence of other diseases and environmental factors. Background/Objectives: Effective communication between nurses and patients plays a crucial role in the delivery of quality healthcare services, especially when caring for patients from diverse cultural backgrounds. It fosters trust, understanding, and collaboration and contributes to better health outcomes and satisfactory nurse–patient relationships. The aim of the study is to assess the factors and barriers affecting nurses’ communication when providing care for patients from diverse cultural backgrounds in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Methods: A cross-sectional quantitative descriptive design is used with an online survey instrument. The study involved registered nurses employed in Jeddah’s hospitals. The study utilized a convenience sample for data collection and used the latest version of the statistical package for the social sciences (SPSS version 21) for data entry and analysis. Results: A study of 367 participants found significant barriers to nurse–patient communication, with a mean score of 2.84 on a three-point scale. Key challenges included language differences between nurses and patients with a mean score of 2.87, and cultural and religious differences with a mean score of 2.83 and 2.81, as well as nurses’ communication skills, attitudes, and self-confidence and patients’ awareness, attitudes, and resistance to communication. The multifaceted nature of these barriers emphasizes the need for targeted interventions to improve nurse–patient interactions and enhance care quality. Conclusions: The study highlights the impact of various factors on effective communication between nurses and patients, emphasizing the need for nurses to develop their communication skills and to receive adequate training from nursing officials.
