The recent emergence of generative AI, particularly prompt-based models, and its embedding in many social domains and practices has revived the notion of co-creation and distributed agency already familiar in art practice and theory. Drawing on Actor-Network Theory (ANT) and its central notion of agency, this article explores the extent to which the collaboration between the artist and AI represents a new form of co-creation and distributed agency. It compares AI art with artistic movements such as Dada, Surrealism, Minimalism and Conceptual Art, which also challenged the notion of the autonomous artist and her agency by incorporating randomness on the one hand and rule-based systems on the other. In contrast, artistic practice with AI can be described as an iterative process of creative feedback loops, oscillating between order and disorder, (calculated) randomness and calculation, enabling a very specific kind of self-reflection and entanglement with the alienation of one’s own perspective. Furthermore, this article argues that most artistic projects that explore and work with AI are, in their own specific way, a demonstration of hybridity and entanglement, as well as the distribution of agency between the human and the non-human, and can thus be described as a network phenomenon. Extracting Sentence Embeddings from Pretrained Transformer Models

Pre-trained transformer models shine in many natural language processing tasks and therefore are expected to bear the representation of the input sentence or text meaning. These sentence-level embeddings are also important in retrieval-augmented generation. But do commonly used plain averaging or prompt templates sufficiently capture and represent the underlying meaning? After providing a comprehensive review of existing sentence embedding extraction and refinement methods, we thoroughly test different combinations and our original extensions of the most promising ones on pretrained models. Namely, given 110 M parameters, BERT’s hidden representations from multiple layers, and many tokens, we try diverse ways to extract optimal sentence embeddings. We test various token aggregation and representation post-processing techniques. We also test multiple ways of using a general Wikitext dataset to complement BERT’s sentence embeddings. All methods are tested on eight Semantic Textual Similarity (STS), six short text clustering, and twelve classification tasks. We also evaluate our representation-shaping techniques on other static models, including random token representations. Proposed representation extraction methods improve the performance on STS and clustering tasks for all models considered. Very high improvements for static token-based models, especially random embeddings for STS tasks, almost reach the performance of BERT-derived representations. Our work shows that the representation-shaping techniques significantly improve sentence embeddings extracted from BERT-based and simple baseline models. Full article

The female body is often depicted in parallel with the environment in many literary works. This article examines how the female body can prompt a rethinking of the environment by analyzing three literary works, Mo Yan’s Feng ru Fei tun, published in 1996 Murakami Haruki’s Nejimaki-dori Kuronikuru, published in 1994-1995, and Gabriel García Márquez’s El amor en los tiempos del cólera, published in 1985, which root in Chinese, Japanese, and Latin American cultures, respectively. This paper argues that, on the one hand, the female body parallels the environment by displaying non-human characteristics and relating to natural elements in these three works; on the other hand, it deconstructs the boundary between the environment and humans by playing a crucial role in constructing human identity. This paper draws on theories of posthumanism, material feminism, and ecofeminism to explore the depiction of the female body and its role in rethinking the environment. The cultural hybridity of local and non-local worldviews—a key reason for situating this study within a transnational comparative framework—serves as a crucial element in demonstrating how the female body bridges the environment and human identity across all three works. This analysis aims to deconstruct the anthropocentric perspective on the environment, thereby rethinking the role of the female body in this context. Full article

The success of mRNA vaccines against SARS-CoV-2 has prompted interest in mRNA-based pharmaceuticals due to their rapid production, adaptability, and safety. Despite these advantages, the inherent instability of mRNA and its rapid degradation in vivo underscores the need for an encapsulation system for the administration and delivery of RNA-based therapeutics. Lipid nanoparticles (LNPs) have proven the most robust and safest option for in vivo applications. However, the mid- to long-term storage of mRNA-LNPs still requires sub-zero temperatures along the entire chain of supply, highlighting the need to develop alternatives to improve mRNA vaccine stability under non-freezing conditions to facilitate logistics and distribution. Lyophilization presents itself as an effective alternative to prolong the shelf life of mRNA vaccines under refrigeration conditions, although a complex optimization of the process parameters is needed to maintain the integrity of the mRNA-LNPs. Recent studies have demonstrated the feasibility of freeze-drying LNPs, showing that lyophilized mRNA-LNPs retain activity and stability. However, long-term functional data remain limited. Herein, we focus on obtaining an optimized lyophilizable mRNA-LNP formulation through the careful selection of an optimal buffer and cryoprotectant and by tuning freeze-drying parameters. The results demonstrate that our optimized lyophilization process maintains LNP characteristics and functionality for over a year at refrigerated temperatures, offering a viable solution to the logistical hurdles of mRNA vaccine distribution. Acetoin biosynthesis by two Bacillus subtilis strains valorising crude glycerol was thoroughly explored within a pre-defined range of culture conditions and systems. B. subtilis ACA-DC 1176 stood out for its higher efficiency in acetoin production, prompting an investigation into the potential for enhanced productivity through the evaluation of diverse culture conditions and media compositions. The primary by-products of the biodiesel and corn industries, namely crude glycerol and corn steep liquor, respectively, were successfully employed as the principal carbon and nitrogen sources of the newly developed low-cost culture medium. Furthermore, the results of the various feeding strategies that were tested indicated that the conversion of 2,3-butanediol (BDO) to acetoin occurred exclusively when the concentration of glycerol was below approximately 5 g/L. This seemed to be necessary for the production of NADH, which is essential for maintaining cellular processes. Following the complete depletion of glycerol, acetic acid increased and became the predominant metabolite, while both acetoin and BDO decreased, presumably resulting in ATP generation. This is likely a mechanism employed by the cell to generate energy in the absence of a carbon source. In the fed-batch bioreactor culture, the kinetics of metabolites differed, as there was no conversion of BDO to acetoin at the final depletion of glycerol. At volumetric mass transfer coefficient (kLa) levels exceeding approximately 70 1/h, the production of acetoin was favoured over that of BDO, with the highest observed acetoin/BDO ratio reaching 4.29 g/g. Conversely, at kLa values below approximately 60 1/h, the titres of acetoin and BDO were found to be nearly equal. The final concentrations of acetoin and BDO reached 36.0 g/L and 25.5 g/L, respectively, resulting in a total yield of both (acetoin + BDO) per glycerol consumption of 0.40 g/g. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to focus on acetoin production from crude glycerol fermentative valorisation. The study presents new findings regarding the parameters influencing the level of BDO conversion to acetoin. However, further research is required in order to gain a comprehensive understanding of the underlying phenomena and metabolic pathways involved. Full article

Real-time monitoring systems are crucial for the comprehensive management of operations and processes, as well as for assessing the impacts of coastal infrastructures on the marine environment. These systems not only support environmental protection and data-driven decision-making but also enable the early detection of adverse events and the issuance of timely warnings for prompt responses. Although water quality is a critical parameter in this monitoring framework, there are currently limited permanent systems in place dedicated to maintaining these objectives. Even fewer systems leverage their data for research purposes, leading to a gap in the literature regarding effective processing approaches for real-time water quality data. In this context, this study presents a real-time water quality monitoring system integrated into a broader in-field laboratory installed at a coastal area off the coast of Ayia Napa, Cyprus, as well as an initial measured data set of different qualitative quantities. It proposes a holistic approach for post-processing real-time seawater quality data, employing both time and frequency domain analyses, alongside filtering techniques. The study discusses the advantages of each method and emphasizes the importance of their combined use. Utilizing data collected from a three-month operational period, the study assesses the current state of marine seawater quality and examines both temporal and cyclic variations in various seawater quality parameters. The findings reveal that the examined seawater parameters are within reasonable values, indicating that the construction and operation of a nearby marina and the necessary infrastructures (e.g., breakwater) did not affect the seawater quality in the area. Additionally, the study identifies pronounced daily cyclic responses in different seawater quality parameters, including temperature, density, pH, dissolved oxygen, and turbidity. Finally, notable correlations are observed between temperature and dissolved oxygen, temperature and conductivity, oxidation–reduction potential (ORP) and salinity, ORP and dissolved oxygen, and ORP and TDS. Introduction: Femoral neck fractures pose significant health risks, particularly in the elderly population, leading to mortality, morbidity, and decreased quality of life. Surgery is the preferred treatment to restore function and alleviate pain, with options including total hip arthroplasty (THA) and hemiarthroplasty (HA). However, clinical guidelines for selecting surgical procedures remain heterogeneous, prompting the need for further investigation into treatment trends and influencing factors. Methods: Data from the NIS database spanning 2016–2019 were analyzed, focusing on patients diagnosed with intracapsular femoral neck fractures and undergoing THA or HA as primary in-hospital surgeries. Advanced statistical analyses using SPSS and MATLAB were conducted to identify trends and factors influencing surgical choices. Results: Comorbidity profiles varied significantly between HA and THA patients, with specific conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease showing higher prevalence in HA patients. Demographic differences included a higher proportion of females and Medicare-insured individuals in the HA group. Racial disparities were observed, with differences in surgical preferences among various ethnic groups. THA adoption gradually increased over the study period, indicating a shift in surgical priorities. Additionally, THA patients tended to be younger on average compared with HA patients. Conclusions: This study highlights evolving trends in surgical management for femoral neck fractures and identifies factors influencing treatment decisions in our cohort. Understanding these trends and disparities is crucial for optimizing patient care and informing future clinical guidelines. Further research should focus on assessing different surgical approaches’ long-term outcomes and cost-effectiveness. Full article

Background: Endovascular treatment (EVT) is an established method for managing large vessel occlusion (LVO), but its efficacy in patients with mild stroke (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale [NIHSS] score < 6) remains debated. Given the clinical problem of early neurological deterioration in approximately 10% of mild stroke patients, understanding the role of EVT in managing these patients is crucial. Our objective was to perform a meta-analysis with trial sequential analysis (TSA) focusing on mild stroke patients with LVO to determine whether EVT offers better outcomes than best medical therapy alone. Methods: A comprehensive search of PubMed, Cochrane, and Embase databases up to 12 December 2023 identified 14 retrospective and prospective cohort studies, including a total of 4436 patients with NIHSS scores less than 6 and presenting with LVO. Studies were categorized into crossover and non-crossover groups to prevent overestimation of the treatment effect. In the crossover group, patients initially treated with BMT were moved to EVT upon clinical deterioration. In the non-crossover group, patients remained in their initially assigned treatment. Meta-analysis and data extraction followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines. The primary outcome was achieving an excellent functional outcome, defined as a modified Rankin scale (mRS) score of 0–1 at 3 months. Secondary outcomes included good (mRS 0–2) and favorable (mRS 0–3) functional outcomes. Safety outcomes were symptomatic intracerebral hemorrhage (sICH) and mortality at 3 months. Results: In the crossover group, EVT did not significantly improve excellent functional outcomes, and TSA results were inconclusive. Conversely, in the non-crossover group, EVT significantly improved the excellent functional outcome rates at 3 months (65.0% vs. 53.7%; OR 1.62; 95% CI 1.13 to 2.32), supported by TSA. EVT increased the risk of sICH in both crossover and non-crossover groups, while mortality rates did not significantly differ between EVT and BMT groups. Conclusions: Our research indicates that thrombectomy may not significantly help mild stroke patients in recovering functional status and could increase the risk of sICH. The disparity in results between crossover and non-crossover studies highlights the critical need for the prompt identification of patients at risk of early neurological deterioration to minimize negative outcomes. Additional randomized controlled trials are essential to optimize the application of EVT in this patient population. Full article

Although meditating on death has long been a central philosophical practice and is gaining prominence in modern European public discourse, certain misconceptions still persist. The Austrian filmmaker Michael Haneke does not shy away from confronting real and performed images of death, combining a denouncing cinematic approach with no less polemic aesthetic and ethical theories. Certainly, visually shocking and disturbing films can, in their own way, challenge the boundaries of what is thinkable, at times even touching upon the unthinkable. Images of death and death-related themes are particularly pervasive in Haneke’s films. His films raise significant philosophical and ethical questions about mortality, violence, death, and ageing. This analysis is a tentative attempt to map how Haneke explores representations of death and dying in Benny’s Video (1992) and Funny Games (1997), with particular reference to the rewind gesture depicted in both films. In doing so, it aims to examine the conversation such films prompt between moving images and the audience. Full article

Smart farming technologies to track and analyze pig behaviors in natural environments are critical for monitoring the health status and welfare of pigs. This study aimed to develop a robust multi-object tracking (MOT) approach named YOLOv8 + OC-SORT(V8-Sort) for the automatic monitoring of the different behaviors of group-housed pigs. We addressed common challenges such as variable lighting, occlusion, and clustering between pigs, which often lead to significant errors in long-term behavioral monitoring. Our approach offers a reliable solution for real-time behavior tracking, contributing to improved health and welfare management in smart farming systems. First, the YOLOv8 is employed for the real-time detection and behavior classification of pigs under variable light and occlusion scenes. Second, the OC-SORT is utilized to track each pig to reduce the impact of pigs clustering together and occlusion on tracking. And, when a target is lost during tracking, the OC-SORT can recover the lost trajectory and re-track the target. Finally, to implement the automatic long-time monitoring of behaviors for each pig, we created an automatic behavior analysis algorithm that integrates the behavioral information from detection and the tracking results from OC-SORT. On the one-minute video datasets for pig tracking, the proposed MOT method outperforms JDE, Trackformer, and TransTrack, achieving the highest HOTA, MOTA, and IDF1 scores of 82.0%, 96.3%, and 96.8%, respectively. And, it achieved scores of 69.0% for HOTA, 99.7% for MOTA, and 75.1% for IDF1 on sixty-minute video datasets. In terms of pig behavior analysis, the proposed automatic behavior analysis algorithm can record the duration of four types of behaviors for each pig in each pen based on behavior classification and ID information to represent the pigs’ health status and welfare. These results demonstrate that the proposed method exhibits excellent performance in behavior recognition and tracking, providing technical support for prompt anomaly detection and health status monitoring for pig farming managers. Background: Myopia (also known as nearsightedness), a prevalent refractive error, occurs when parallel rays of light converge in front of the retina, resulting in blurry distance vision. Recently, there has been a marked rise in myopia among the global population. The absence of effective methods of controlling the progression of this visual defect prompts the search for new preventive and therapeutic options. The impact of diet and lifestyle on the progression of myopia is still not fully understood. Therefore, our aim was to examine how these factors might affect the advancement of myopia, based on the existing literature. Methods: This manuscript was prepared through an extensive literature review conducted from June 2022 to September 2024. We searched for pertinent research articles using reputable databases, including PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science. We included all types of publications, with a special focus on the newest ones. Results: Despite far-reaching examination, the relationship between these factors and myopia control remains inconclusive with varying degrees of evidence supporting their roles. Conclusions: However, promoting a healthy lifestyle, particularly increasing physical activity and outdoor time, is essential. Additionally, emerging research suggests that maintaining a balanced diet is important due to the potential impact of certain nutrients on myopia development. Ophthalmologists should also guide parents on the alternative correction methods beyond single vision glasses, especially for rapidly progressing cases. With the rising prevalence of myopia in children, further research is necessary. Full article

The introduction of generative AI has the potential to radically transform various fields of research, including archaeology. This study explores the potential of generative AI, specifically ChatGPT, in developing a computer application for analyzing aerial and satellite images to detect archaeological anomalies. The main focus was not on developing the application itself but on evaluating ChatGPT’s effectiveness as an IT assistant for humanistic researchers. Starting with a simple prompt to analyze a multispectral orthophoto, the application was developed through successive iterations, improved through continuous interactions with ChatGPT. Various technical and methodological challenges were addressed, leading to the creation of a functional application with multiple features, including various analysis methods and tools. This process demonstrated how the use of large language models (LLMs) can break down the barriers between humanities and computer science disciplines, enabling researchers without programming skills to develop complex applications in a short time. Detection of Porcine Circovirus (PCV) Using CRISPR-Cas12a/13a Coupled with Isothermal Amplification

The impact of porcine circovirus (PCV) on the worldwide pig industry is profound, leading to notable economic losses. Early and prompt identification of PCV is essential in managing and controlling this disease effectively. A range of detection techniques for PCV have been developed and primarily divided into two categories focusing on nucleic acid or serum antibody identification. The methodologies encompass conventional polymerase chain reaction (PCR), real-time fluorescence quantitative PCR (qPCR), fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH), loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP), immunofluorescence assay (IFA), immunohistochemistry (IHC), and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Despite their efficacy, these techniques are often impeded by the necessity for substantial investment in equipment, specialized knowledge, and intricate procedural steps, which complicate their application in real-time field detections. To surmount these challenges, a sensitive, rapid, and specific PCV detection method using Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats (CRISPR)-Cas12a/13a coupled with isothermal amplification, such as enzymatic recombinase amplification (ERA), recombinase polymerase amplification (RPA), and loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP), has been developed. This novel method has undergone meticulous optimization for detecting PCV types 2, 3, and 4, boasting a remarkable sensitivity to identify a single copy per microliter. The specificity of this technique is exemplary, with no observable interaction with other porcine viruses such as PEDV, PRRSV, PRV, and CSFV. Its reliability has been validated with clinical samples, where it produced a perfect alignment with qPCR findings, showcasing a 100% coincidence rate. The elegance of merging CRISPR-Cas technology with isothermal amplification assays lies in its on-site testing without the need for expensive tools or trained personnel, rendering it exceptionally suitable for on-site applications, especially in resource-constrained swine farming environments. This review assesses and compares the process and characteristics inherent in the utilization of ERA/LAMP/RPA-CRISPR-Cas12a/Cas13a methodologies for the detection of PCV, providing critical insights into their practicality and effectiveness. The deficiency of vitamins, a condition known as “hidden hunger”, causes comprehensive pathological states. Research over the years has identified a relationship between liver diseases and hypovitaminosis or defects in vitamin metabolism. The exact mechanisms remain elusive; however, the crucial involvement of specific vitamins in metabolic functions, alongside the reclassification of liver disease as metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), has prompted researchers to investigate the potential cause-effect dynamics between vitamin deficiency and liver disease. Moreover, scientists are increasingly investigating how the deficiency of vitamins might disrupt specific organ crosstalk, potentially contributing to liver disease. Although the concept of a dysmetabolic circuit linking adipose tissue and the liver, leading to liver disease, has been discussed, the possible involvement of vitamin deficiency in this axis is a relatively recent area of study, with numerous critical aspects yet to be fully understood. In this review, we examine research from 2019 to July 2024 focusing on the possible link between liver-adipose tissue crosstalk and vitamin deficiency involved in the onset and progression of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Studies report that vitamin deficiency can affect the liver-adipose tissue axis, mainly affecting the regulation of systemic energy balance and inflammation. Full article

The migration of chemical compounds from packaging polymers to food presents a multifaceted challenge with implications for food safety and public health. This review explores the interaction between packaging materials and food products, focusing on permeation, migration, and sorption processes. The different migration mechanisms of contact migration, gas phase migration, penetration migration, set-off migration, and condensation/distillation migration have been discussed comprehensively. The major migrating compounds are plasticizers, nanoparticles, antioxidants, light stabilizers, thermal stabilizers, monomers, oligomers, printing inks, and adhesives, posing potential health risks due to their association with endocrine disruption and carcinogenic effects. Advanced analytical methods help in the monitoring of migrated compounds, facilitating compliance with regulatory standards. Regulatory agencies enforce guidelines to limit migration, prompting the development of barrier coatings and safer packaging alternatives. Furthermore, there is a need to decipher the migration mechanism for mitigating it along with advancements in analytical techniques for monitoring the migration of compounds. Full article
