We are also proud to welcome over 2,500 students from countries in East Asia. They contribute to our academic excellence and global university community.
RENKEI the Japan-UK Research and Education Network
Newcastle University is a proud member of RENKEI.
RENKEI is a partnership between 12 universities in Japan and the UK, aiming to further knowledge exchange and research collaboration.
Since 2018, RENKEI has prioritised research and collaborations on climate change and health. This led to workshops focussing on:
- influencing climate policy in the lead-up to COP26
- healthy ageing, including new models of dementia care
Drought resilience in ecosystem services and rural communities in China
Researchers at Newcastle University are working with the National Engineering Research Centre for Information Technology in Agriculture (NERCITA). They are co-developing new methods of:
- predicting drought impacts on crop production
- monitoring the impacts of ongoing drought events on agriculture
Project partners will work closely with agricultural service providers in China. They will ensure such tools benefit Chinese farmers and the agricultural industry globally.

The Confucius Institute
The Confucius Institute is a partnership between Newcastle University and Xiamen University of China. It aims to promote the study of Chinese language and the understanding of Chinese culture and contemporary China.
The institute also develops educational and cultural exchanges with China within the North East of England.

Community-led monitoring to improve water quality
Upstream is a research project aiming to improve water quality. The project works with local communities to raise awareness and collect water data. In partnership with National Taiwan University, it is taking place at pilot sites in the UK and Taiwan.
Upstream uses low-cost water quality sensors to better understand the water environment and instigate change.
Sakura Network (The JF Nihongo Network - Japan Foundation)
Newcastle University is one of four leading HE institutions in the UK to receive this invitation-only membership awarded by the Japan Foundation.
The Japanese studies of the School of Modern Languages has been involved in activities to enhance Japanese language education in the North of England.
