Monthly Tropical Weather Summary

For the eastern North Pacific, east of 140 degrees west longitude:

Two named storms formed in the month of September, one of which 
became a major hurricane (John) in the eastern Pacific basin. 
Tropical Storm Ileana formed earlier in the month and affected 
southern Baja California Sur with tropical storm conditions. John 
made landfall along the southern coast of Mexico as a category 3 
hurricane late in the month. 

The formation of two tropical cyclones is below the long-term 
(1991-2020) September average of three named storms forming in the 
month, and the formation of one hurricane is below the long-term 
average of two.  John becoming a major hurricane matches the 
long-term September average of one major hurricane.  The season to 
date Accumulated Cyclone Energy (ACE), which measures the combined 
strength and duration of tropical storms and hurricanes, is about 55 
percent of the long-term (1991-2020) average.
