Publishing with Plural

Plural Publishing is a well-regarded, independent publisher with more than 600 published titles. We publish 50+ books a year in print and electronic formats. We produce innovative, high-quality content authored by influential, leading experts and experienced practicing clinicians and educators. To learn more about us, visit our Who We Are page.

Plural welcomes original book proposals on topics across the disciplines listed below. Below you will find detailed information on our publishing program and instructions on how to submit a book proposal. If you haven’t already done so, please also browse through our website to familiarize yourself with the types of books we publish to see if your book idea is a good fit with our publishing program.

We seek to publish high-quality, evidence-based content in various formats, including but not limited to textbooks (academic texts for undergraduate and graduate courses), and helpful resources for professional clinicians and educators. Our books are published in both print and ebook formats.

Our publishing program focuses on the following disciplines:

  • Communication Sciences and Disorders (content coverage covering speech, language, and hearing)
  • Audiology
  • Speech-Language Pathology
  • Special Education - We are launching a new portfolio of books in this discipline. View our brochure.
  • American Sign Language and Deaf Education
  • Singing and Vocal Pedagogy
  • Medicine: Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery with specific focus on laryngology, otology, and resources helpful to ENT residents and fellows during training and in studying for the board exams.

Submit a Book Proposal

If you would like us to consider your manuscript or book idea, please download our Editorial and Marketing Questionnaire (EMQ) in MS Word.  Please be sure to describe your vision, purpose, intended audience, and any competitive books available on the market.  Your content should consider cultural and linguistic diversity whenever possible.  Be sure to complete all fields as comprehensively as possible. When you have completed the EMQ, please send it via email to Executive Editor, Valerie Johns at valerie@pluralpublishing.com.

In addition to your proposal, other items you may wish to submit, or that we may request later, include:

  • A draft manuscript of the proposed book (if available) OR at least two sample chapters (which may include the introduction and/or conclusion), giving us an idea of the themes, style, content, and writing; and
  • A one-page curriculum vitae for each named author or editor.

Please note that even if you send us a full manuscript or a substantial proportion of the work, we still need you to submit a proposal in accordance with these guidelines.

What to Expect After You Submit your Proposal

We aim to send you a decision on your proposal within 5-6 weeks after receipt. Your proposal will be evaluated by our publishing team, our editorial advisory board, and often select peer reviewers.  We will assess the content, quality, fit with our publishing program, and potential market demand. If the proposal is accepted, your acquisitions editor will contact you with a contract outlining the terms and conditions of publication as well as an agreed-upon manuscript length and submission deadline. Our editorial team prides itself on maintaining close contact with our authors through their manuscript process and is on hand to help with any questions and to provide assistance.

Once the manuscript has been written and delivered according to the agreed-upon conditions, it is passed to our production team, who supervise the copy editing and print production process. Plural places great emphasis on bringing books rapidly to market, and this should not take more than 6-8 months. We will then publish, market, and sell the book.
