Abstract
Expanded polystyrene (EPS)- block geofoam is an extremely lightweight fill material utilized in many geotechnical applications such as roadway and railway embankments. This study provides a methodology for analyzing the load-bearing capacity and horizontal sliding failure mechanisms for seismic internal stability analysis of EPSblock geofoam embankments. The seismic analysis procedure is demonstrated by analysis of one of the EPS-block geofoam embankments that Tennessee Department of Transportation is proposing a partial replacement of an existing bridge in Memphis, Tennessee in the USA. The objective of the seismic analysis procedure is to determine stresses from anticipated earthquakes to select the proper type of EPS considering both the 1% and 2% strain criteria that can support the anticipated increase in stress and potential horizontal displacements due to dynamic and static stresses. The study revealed that the 2% criterion provides an economical advantage compared to the 1% criterion.
