This study aims to evaluate tramadol’s effect during elective ovariectomy in female dogs under general anesthesia with isoflurane, premedicated with 0.025 mg/kg medetomidine IM, 0.2 mg/kg methadone IM and 2 mg/kg ketamine IM. Seventeen female dogs were divided into control (CG) and tramadol (TG) groups. Dogs in the TG also received a 4 mg/kg IV tramadol bolus one minute prior to skin incision. Heart rate (HR), systolic blood pressure, and mean blood pressure were recorded at baseline, skin incision, traction (T1) and clamping (T2) of the right ovarian pedicle, and traction and clamping of the left ovarian pedicle. Tramadol caused a 39.8% (p<0.05) and a 31.9% (p<0.05) HR increase at T1 and T2, respectively, when compared to the CG, which lasted a maximum of eight minutes. Although tramadol has a potential positive chronotropic effect, it can safely provide additional intraoperative analgesia before intense noxious stimuli, for at least seven minutes.

The present clinical study was approved by the Review Board for Animals Care of the University of Parma prot N. 03/CESA /2023, which provided a consent to the clinical study: regulation (EU) no. 536/2014. (22A01712) (GU General Series n.65 of 18-03-2022); European Law (O.J. of E.C. L 358/1 12/18/1986), and USA Laws (Animal Welfare Assurance No A5594-01, Department of Health and Human Services, USA). The owners signed a voluntary informed consent form prior to the dogs’ enrollment in the study. Twenty female dogs, aged 1±1.5 months, and weighing 16± 0.5 kg were enrolled in the study. The inclusion criterion of the patients was to undergo ovariectomy surgery; dogs enrolled in this study had normal physiological, haematological and biochemical parameters.

Estrogen decline during menopause is associated with altered metabolism, weight gain and increased risk for cardiometabolic diseases. The gut microbiota also plays a role in the development of cardiometabolic dysfunction and is also subject to changes associated with age-related hormone changes. Phytoestrogens are plant-based estrogen mimics that have gained popularity as dietary supplements for treatment or prevention of menopause-related symptoms. These compounds have the potential to both modulate and to be metabolized by the gut microbiota. Hops (Humulus lupulus L.) contain potent phytoestrogen precursors, which rely on microbial biotransformation in the gut to estrogenic forms. We supplemented ovariectomized (OVX) or sham-operated (SHAM) C57BL/6 mice, with oral estradiol (E2), a flavonoid-rich extract from hops, or a placebo carrier oil to observe effects on adiposity, inflammation, and gut bacteria composition. Hops extract and E2 protected against increased visceral adiposity and liver triglyceride accumulation in OVX animals. Surprisingly, we found no evidence of OVX having a significant impact on the overall gut bacterial community structure. We did find differences in abundance of Akkermansia muciniphila, which was lower with HE treatment relative to the OVX E2 treatment and to placebo in the SHAM group.

Ovariectomy appears to be the best method to control the density of wild ungulate populations. The aim of the present study was to compare two surgical approaches, via the flank and midline, in mouflon’s ovariectomy in field conditions. Twenty female mouflons were enrolled in the study. The animals were divided randomly in two groups, Group F animals were gonadectomized via flank approach, while Group A animals were sterilized via linea alba access. The parameters evaluated were duration of surgery, duration of anaesthesia, recovery time, intra- and post-operative complications, intra-operative nociception and pain in the post-operative period. There were no intra- and post-operative complications. The evaluated parameters showed a very similar trend in both groups. Both techniques are found to be effective and safe in execution.
