Aliyah's Interlude

With uncertainty gripping teens and young adults during the COVID-19 pandemic, teens and young adults were looking for any distraction to make the world outside their four walls seem more interesting. Enter Aliyah’s Interlude, an influencer who has gained a massive following for her unique fashion sense and managed to translate that into multi-faceted success once the world started to open up -- both as a model and a musician. Aliyah Bay was born in 2003 in Atlanta, Georgia, to immigrants from Sierra Leone who owned a business that recycled clothing. This had a profound impact on the young Bay, who spent her entire upbringing mixing, matching, and accenting unusual outfits. In 2020, with little to do in lockdown, Bay started showing off her outfits on social media, heavy on pink pieces (miniskirts, bikini tops, and fishnets) accented with outré accessories from big necklaces and Moon Boots to wigs and furry hats. She’d soon dub the style “Aliyahcore,” a hashtag whose impressions soon skyrocketed into the hundreds of millions. By 2023, Bay parlayed her video virality into real-world moves. She participated in runway shows at Fashion Week events in London and Barcelona and appeared in the music video for Doja Cat's Top Ten hit “Agora Hills.” Soon, she’d make music of her own: her debut single “IT Girl” featured her confident rapped verses over a ‘90s house style -- think Grace Jones mixed with RuPaul. The follow-up “Fashion Icon” (2024) repeated the formula with a Eurodisco-inspired electronic beat, and her next tune, “Love Me,” was her first to mix raps and sung vocals.
