Chore

An aggressive alt-rock outfit from Southern Ontario, Chore emerged during the post-hardcore boom of the mid-'90s. Stalwarts of the influential Canadian indie label Sonic Unyon, they released a trio of albums around the turn of the millennium including 2002's well-received The Coastaline Fire. Although they disbanded in 2004, Chore re-formed occasionally over the ensuing years to play reunion concerts around their native Ontario and released a new single in 2021. Brothers Mike and Chris Bell formed Chore in late 1994 in the town of Dunnville, Ontario, just off the coast of Lake Erie. Joining them for their first phase was drummer David Dunham and bassist Brian Pettigrew. Signing with the Hamilton-based Sonic Unyon label, Chore employed a unique setup on their debut album, with Chris Bell singing and playing guitar and Mike using a double-necked guitar/bass combo to give the band an extra boost of low-end. This distinctive lineup could be heard on 1997's Another Plebeian and its 1999 follow-up, Take My Mask and Breathe. Touring heavily throughout Canada, Chore built a small, but devoted audience, particularly around Ontario. Following their second album, Pettigrew was replaced by Mitch Bowden on guitar and vocals, allowing Mike Bell to switch solely to bass. Operating with a more traditional rock format, Chore intensified their focus to produce their third album, The Coastaline Fire, in 2002. It's lead single "The Hitchhiker" found some traction, and the album saw release a year later in Japan. Meanwhile Chore continued to tour Canada as well as the U.S. Ending their ten-year run, Chore disbanded in 2004. Several group members remained active in subsequent projects like Alive and Living, Don Vail, Customaries, and Not of. They reunited for a handful of 2010 shows and have continued to resurface now and again for regional gigs. In early 2021, Chore returned to the studio and released the two-track single "Face" and "Greenhorn."
