Chris Farren
Florida native Chris Farren made his name fronting the Naples-based outfit Fake Problems, whose mix of alt-country, punk, and emo won them a hardcore fan base in the late 2000s. Also a member of the band Antarctigo Vespucci, Farren's solo career, which includes releases like Can't Die (2016) and Born Hot (2019), has veered more toward melodic bedroom indie pop. In the next decade, he continued to experiment stylistically, composing a fake spy thriller soundtrack, then collaborating with Jay Som on the rangy 2023 album Doom Singer.
After Fake Problems' breakup in 2014, Farren began issuing various independent solo releases starting with a Christmas LP titled Like a Gift from God or Whatever, followed in 2015 by a compilation of demos and a handful of singles. His proper solo debut, Can't Die, arrived in 2016 on SideOneDummy Records and introduced a strong melodic pop element into his sound. After relocating to Los Angeles and inking a deal with Polyvinyl, Farren's 2019 follow-up, the Billboard-charting Born Hot, expanded on his indie pop tendencies with bright synths and vintage drum machines. 2020 saw Farren issue the dreamy power pop stand-alone single "FALL IN LOVE2NIGHT." His next full-length project followed a unique conceit. Fashioned as a soundtrack to an imaginary spy thriller, 2022's mostly instrumental Death Don't Wait was inspired by Marvin Gaye's classic 1972 Trouble Man soundtrack and featured help from fromer bandmate Jeff Rosenstock, among others. A year later, Farren teamed up with bedroom pop artist Jay Som who produced, engineering, and mixed his next album, Doom Singer. Led by the heavy bubblegum punk of lead single "Cosmic Leash," the album moved through Farren's various eccentricities, from more low-key singer/songwriter fare to blaring, aggressive hardcore elements.
