Proto Idiot

Mancunian garage punk outfit Proto Idiot took shape in 2007 as a solo side project from Hipshakes guitarist Andrew Anderson. Cheekily self-described as "dim-witted" and "ill-advised," Anderson's work under the Proto Idiot banner actually displayed an innate knack for hooky, jangly, lo-fi guitar pop. Surrounding himself with members from like-minded bands like CoCoComa and Negative Scanner, he delivered early singles and EPs like Attempting to Make Music (2012) and Saturday Night (2013). Much of Proto Idiot's output has been self-released, but a handful of singles and EPs were issued by labels like Trouble in Mind, Odd Box, and Red Lounge. In 2014, Anderson was joined by full-time cohorts Michael Floyd Seal on bass and Callum Trent D'Arley on drums. The following year, he issued a pair of compilations featuring various outtakes and unreleased tracks called Forgot to Remember to Release, Vol. 1 and Vol. 2. The new lineup continued to crank out tracks, issuing the 2015 EP The Technique and Its Use in Daily Living and the single Idiot Blues before signing with U.K. label Bad Paintings. Proto Idiot's first release for the label was the ambitious double album Also Known As/His Colony Boys, which arrived in early 2016.
