Roman Patkoló

Slovak double bassist Roman Patkoló has emerged as one of the world's top players of his instrument, leading his own ensemble as well as commissioning new concertos for the double bass. Patkoló was born in Zilina, Slovakia, then part of Czechoslovakia, on February 6, 1982. He took up the double bass at 13, never playing a miniature version of the instrument, and he made rapid progress. At 15 he won first prize in a Slovak national double bass competition. By that time he had enrolled at the Zilina Conservatory, studying with Jan Krigovsky and Ruzena Sípkova, and at the Munich Conservatory, where his teacher was Klaus Trumpf. He won further competitions as a student, such as the International Double Bass Competition in the U.S. state of Iowa in 1999 and the Johannes Matthias Sperger International Competition in Germany in 2000, as well as second prize at a Munich competition sponsored by the ARD public broadcasting network in 2003. Patkoló joined the Anne-Sophie Mutter Foundation on a scholarship in 1999 and quickly found himself in the international concert spotlight, performing with Mutter and with conductor André Previn, from whom he commissioned a new concerto for violin, double bass, and orchestra; the work was performed in 2007 by the Boston Symphony Orchestra with Mutter as the violinist and Patkoló on double bass. In Europe, Patkoló gained additional exposure from television appearances on the Stars of Tomorrow program and on the Europe-wide ARTE arts network. Patkoló has gone on to commission further works such as Dyade for violin and double bass from Wolfgang Rihm in 2011 and a Duo concertante per violino e contrabbasso from Krzysztof Penderecki (2013). He began performing while still a student with the chamber ensemble Bassiona Amorosa and later formed his own Roman Patkoló Ensemble. His recording career began in 2005 with an appearance on an album of 21st Century Instrumental Solos (performing the Bass Trip of Peteris Vasks), but has since been closely associated with Mutter's recordings. In 2018 he joined Mutter and other musicians on the Deutsche Grammophon release Hommage à Penderecki. Patkoló has taught at the Munich University of Music and the Performing Arts and at the Basel Music Academy.
