The Knitters
Los Angeles punk heroes X always had a bit of a country twang beneath their raucous, rockabilly-charged hard-rock mayhem. The Knitters allowed X to play up that influence without the distraction of their day job. Comprising X members John Doe (bass/vocals), D.J. Bonebrake (drums), and Exene Cervenka (vocals), along with bassist Johnny Ray Bartel and Blasters’ guitarist Dave Alvin, the Knitters released POOR LITTLE CRITTER IN THE ROAD in 1985. The primarily acoustic album features original material and covers of songs by Leadbelly, Merle Haggard, and others. In 2005 the Knitters reunited to record THE MODERN SOUNDS OF THE KNITTERS, an album similar in sound to their first, which fits perfectly into the alt-country genre that burgeoned in the late ‘90s and 2000s.
