070 Shake

Alternately fraught, vicious, and achingly heartfelt, the voice of rapper/singer 070 Shake is among the most unique in contemporary music, adaptable to pop ballads and rock anthems, club tracks, and virtually any style of rap. The New Jersey native's breakthrough came with "Trust Nobody" (2016), a cold-blooded single that led to a lasting affiliation with Kanye West and his Getting Out Our Dreams label. She made her official label debut with the revealing Glitter EP (2018) and followed that with Modus Vivendi (2020), a full-length highlighted by the gold-certified single "Guilty Conscience." Shake has continued with You Can't Kill Me Because I Don't Exist (2022) and PETRICHOR (2024), albums varying sonically and lyrically in equally great measures. The latter was previewed with the Beach Boys-inspired "Winter Baby/New Jersey Blues." Born and raised in North Bergen, New Jersey, 070 Shake (Danielle Balbuena) came up as part of the 070 crew, and broke through in 2016 as a teenager with "Trust Nobody." Originally released during the year's first quarter, the track was picked up by Kanye West's Def Jam-distributed Getting Out Our Dreams label, which re-released it in late September as Shake was about to begin an extensive October-November trek across the U.S. as the opening act for the 1975. A Lil Yachty collaboration titled "Rewind" was issued during that stretch. Just after the tour's completion, Def Jam released the various-artists Direct Deposit, Vol. 1 compilation and featured "Trust Nobody" as the finale. Shortly thereafter, Shake and her 070 associates -- including Ralphy River, Treee Safari, and Phi -- independently released a compilation of their own, The 070 Project: Chapter One. Another independent Shake single, "Stranger," followed in April 2017. In 2018, Shake headed out on her own with Glitter, an EP highlighted by the emotive and spare ballads "I Laugh When I'm with Friends But Sad When I'm Alone" and "Glitter." Her mainstream breakthrough arrived months later with key appearances on Pusha T's "Santeria" and Kanye West's "Ghost Town" and "Violent Crimes." The following year saw Shake release "Nice to Have" and "Morrow," both of which helped her place her 2020 debut album, Modus Vivendi, on Billboard's Heatseekers chart. The set also spawned "Guilty Conscience," her first RIAA-certified gold single as a lead artist. Shake co-produced her second full-length, You Can't Kill Me Because I Don't Exist, which arrived in 2022 with the downcast "Skin and Bones" and sensual Christine and the Queens collaboration "Body" among the singles. A featured appearance on Christine's "True Love" appeared in 2023, as did the singles "Black Dress" and "Natural Habitat" (featuring Ken Carson). In 2024, Shake appeared on West and Ty Dolla $ign's "SKY CITY," then offered "Winter Baby/New Jersey Blues" as a precursor to her third album, PETRICHOR, issued in November.
