Sinclair

An artist of musical crossbreeding, Sinclair has benefited from a rich artistic heritage to skillfully surf between funk, pop and rock. Born Mathieu Blanc-Francard on July 19, 1970 in Tours, France, he comes from a family deeply rooted in the music industry. His father, Dominique Blanc-Francard, is a renowned sound engineer. His brother, Hubert Blanc-Francard, better known under the pseudonym Boombass, is a member of the electro duo Cassius. Sinclair is also the nephew of Patrice Blanc-Francard, an influential figure in television production, notably for co-creating the Antenne 2 program Les Enfants du Rock . Mathieu Blanc-Francard grew up in Paris, where he studied at the Lycée Janson-de-Sailly. As a teenager, he developed a passion for music, influenced by Afro-American sounds. He worked as an assistant sound engineer in a recording studio while learning the guitar. It was during this period that he formed his first band and adopted the stage name Sinclair, in homage to the character in the TV series Amicalement Vôtre. In 1992, with the help of his brother Hubert, Sinclair recorded the album Que Justice Soit Faite! He played all the instruments except drums, mastering the production of what was initially just a demo made in his apartment. The album came out in 1993, and the first single, "Votre Image", was a hit with the public. In 1995, he received the title of Revelation of the Year at the Victoires de la Musique awards. His second album, Au Mépris du Danger, was released in 1995, with an emphasis on melodies. After 250 concerts with his group Le Système, Sinclair took a break before returning in 1997 with a third album, La Bonne Attitude, certified gold. It spawned a hit single, "Si c'est bon comme ça" (No. 54 in France in 1999). In 1999, he released a live album recorded at Le Zénith in Paris. However, tensions with his record company put the production of his next album on hold, and it was not released until 2001 under the title Supernova Superstar. This album, recorded in his family's Labomatic studio, reaffirmed the influence of funk in his music. In 2004, Sinclair released the album Comme Je Suis, followed by a compilation, Best of. His sixth album, Morphologique, was released in 2006 on his own label, Mini Strong. Sinclair was a member of the Nouvelle Star jury in 2008-2009, and again in 2012-2013. In the meantime, he has been composing film soundtracks, and in 2009 received a César nomination for the soundtrack to the film Le Premier Jour du Reste de ta Vie. He released the studio album Sinclair in 2011. In 2017, he became host of Le Plein de Sensations on France 4 and took part in the eighth season of Danse avec les Stars on TF1. He returned to his main activity in 2023 with the release of the album So Sorry en 2023, which features the track "Elle dit".
