Dee-1

Dee-1 is an amiable underdog rapper inspired by the likes of 2Pac, Nas, and Lauryn Hill, as well as his Christian faith. The prolific New Orleans native released a handful of mixtapes before he made his proper album debut with David & Goliath (2009), a self-issued set that prompted an offer from Cash Money Records (which he declined). Dee raised his profile again with the star-studded Focus Tape (2012) and then briefly recorded for RCA Inspiration and Essential Sound, releasing 3's Up EP (2015) and Slingshot David (2017) for those Sony-distributed labels. Since then, the increasingly wise Dee has been settled with Mission Vision Music, his platform for projects such as God and Girls (2019), the Murs collaboration He's the Christian, I'm the Rapper (2020), and LOADED (2024). Born David Arnold Augustine, Jr. in New Orleans, Dee-1 didn't start rapping until he was enrolled at Louisiana State University, but he proved to be a quick study. He released his first two mixtapes during the mid-2000s. The year he graduated from LSU and began teaching mathematics at a middle school, he released his third mixtape. In 2009, the same year he opted to stop teaching and focus on music, he self-issued David & Goliath, his proper debut album. Several additional mixtape releases followed in a short span of time, and his reach continually lengthened; 2012's The Focus Tape alone featured collaborations with Killer Mike and hometown heroes Mannie Fresh and Juvenile. The year that set was released, Dee made an appearance on HBO's Treme (season three, episode nine). 3's Up EP was issued by RCA Inspiration in 2015, though Dee moved to another Sony-distributed label, Essential Sound, for his second album, Slingshot David, a 2017 effort featuring an appearance from Sevyn Streeter on the single "Love Always Wins." Dee-1 found yet another home with Mission Vision Music, and in 2019 returned with God and Girls, led by "I Know God" and tracks assisted by the likes of Jonathan McReynolds, PJ Morton, and Christon Gray. Next came Timeless, and then the Murs collaboration He's the Christian, I'm the Rapper (the title and cover of which were humorous nods to DJ Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince's He's the DJ, I'm the Rapper), both of which arrived in 2020. Numerous stand-alone tracks preceded and followed those two albums, and though 2021 passed without a full-length from the MC, he made up in 2022 with Finding Balance and God and Girls 2, sets that boasted verses from Lupe Fiasco, Big K.R.I.T., and Starlito, among others. UNO, acronymic for "underdogs and outcasts," appeared in 2023 and was followed the next year by EPs titled From the Hood to Harvard and LOADED (or "life of a disruptor evolving daily").
