Tomemitsu

The discography of indie-pop artist Tomemitsu operates in interesting contradictions. While most of his music is hushed and intimate, he’s had success with an unlikely dance remix of signature song “In Dreams.” It seems meant for headphones, but his songs have also found fans as background music in television. And while he primarily writes and performs the tunes himself, one of his most striking albums highlighted a cadre of collaborators at a time when global conditions made it seem impossible. Martin Roark was born to Japanese and Brazilian parents in the Bay Area; upon moving to Los Angeles, he converted a spare bedroom into a recording space and began self-recording songs that were alternately introspective and carefree - built around minimal, often acoustic instrumentation (chiefly a nylon-string guitar) and his own distinctive vocals. He’d start releasing them under his middle name, Tomemitsu, beginning with 2013’s full-length debut M_O_D_E_S. One track, “In Dreams,” would enjoy an unusual second and third act beyond its place on the record; it was licensed for an episode of the HBO series High Maintenance - reportedly, a last-minute replacement for a Grizzly Bear track - and in 2016 would get an unlikely but popular remix by the dance group RSS DIsco. More appealing lo-fi releases followed: 2016’s Loaf Eye dabbled in light psychedelia, while 2017’s Had a Dream (a joint release with East Coast lo-fi artist Alexei Shishkin) and 2018 EP The Cave were more akin to what Tomemitsu's earlier work sounded like. His next works were something of a surprise: the I’ll Be Alright EP, issued in 2020, offered a few updates of unreleased songs, and served as a teaser for his next full-length, 2021’s Sun. Recorded in part before the COVID-19 pandemic, this album found Tomemitsu collaborating with a universe of indie singers and musicians (V.V. Lightbody, Steady Holiday, Eva B. Ross and others). At a time when in-person collaboration was at its lowest ebb across not just music but most walks of life, Sun became one of the most pleasant albums of Tomemitsu's career. The introspective Dream 2 followed in 2024.
