Cat Burns
Cat Burns has a knack for combining honest songwriting with strong melodic hooks and a style that lands somewhere between pop, R&B, and folk. The London-based artist had already released a pair of EPs before finding significant grassroots success on social media during the global pandemic with breakout songs like 2020's "Go" and 2021's "Free." A deal with RCA further bolstered her profile ahead of the 2022 EP Emotionally Unavailable, and they ultimately issued her debut album, early twenties, in 2024.
Growing up in Streatham, South London, Burns heard plenty of gospel, pop, hip-hop, and R&B and by her teenage years, she'd become an accomplished singer, guitarist, and budding songwriter. She cut her teeth busking on the South Bank and posting acoustic cover songs online before taking the plunge and releasing 2016's Adolescent, an EP of stripped-down folk-pop songs that introduced her uplifting, personal songwriting style. Burns eventually graduated from the creatively inclined BRIT School and continued building her audience with songs like "Trust Issues" and "Sober," the latter of which anchored her 2019 EP Naive. During the 2020 global pandemic she put more focused effort into posting new songs on social media and was rewarded with viral success, particularly with her empowered breakup song "Go." Burns, who identifies as queer, also began singing more outspokenly about LGBTQI+ issues in a positive, affirmational style. She signed with major-label RCA and released songs like 2021s "It's Over" and "Free." The release of her third EP, 2022's Emotionally Unavailable, coincided with dates supporting Ed Sheeran and Olly Alexander. "Home for My Heart," a collaborative single with the British rapper ArrDee hit the U.K. Top 40 in 2023, and the following year finally saw the release of Burns' debut full-length, early twenties.
