Flee Lord

The rich lineage of hip-hop in Queens -- from Run-DMC and LL Cool J to Nas, A Tribe Called Quest, and Mobb Deep -- continues with Flee Lord, who parlayed a co-sign from the late, local legend Prodigy into a prolific career. David Cordova, a Far Rockaway native, came up as an amateur freestyler with his unfussy, almost vintage delivery. His life changed considerably when he met and befriended Prodigy -- one-half of the acclaimed duo Mobb Deep, who notched four Top Ten albums in the ‘90s and 2000s. Initially meeting through mutual friends in 2008, they reconnected three years later, after Prodigy completed a prison sentence. The elder rapper’s encouragement continued until his death in 2017; even while battling sickle-cell anemia, he was introducing Cordova to likeminded emcees like Westside Gunn and his half-brother, Conway the Machine, co-founders of the underground label Griselda Records. Flee Lord released his debut mixtape, Loyalty or Death: Lord Talk, Vol. 1, in 2017; it featured guest verses from Conway and one of the last recordings from Prodigy, who died a month after it came out. Flee released music at a brisk clip, often featuring luminaries like Gunn, Conway, and Benny the Butcher as guests. Early standout sets include a dizzying string of six releases in 2019: Gets Greater Later, Ups and Downs (a collaboration with West Coast rapper Phonk P), Later Is Now, Loyalty + Trust (a team-up with New York/Atlanta mainstay 38 Spesh), Rocamerikkka (with ETO) and Dirty Restaurant (with Grafh). COVID didn’t slow him down: 2020 and 2021 saw two of his highest-profile joint releases, The People’s Champ with legendary Bronx producer Pete Rock, and Rammellzee with DJ Muggs of Cypress Hill at the boards. he released Full Court Press and Raised in the Sand in 2024.
