Quivers

Combining jangly guitars, wistful melodies, and interweaving vocal lines from four distinctive singers, Australian quartet Quivers builds their sound on cues taken from both obscure and well-known greats of indie rock. The band sets straightforward guitar pop song structures as their foundation to explore expanded instrumentation, with lyrical themes of loss, loneliness, and painful growth coming to the fore of their 2021 album Golden Doubt. Quivers signed with Merge Records for the release of their next album, 2024's Oyster Cuts. Quivers was formed in Hobart, Tasmania by songwriter/guitarist/vocalist Sam J. Nicholson, and along with the first iteration of the band, recorded their debut album, We'll Go Riding on the Hearses, in 2015. Over the next few years, the lineup solidified with guitarist/vocalist Michael Panton (who had played on the debut), bassist/vocalist Bella Quinlan, and drummer/vocalist Holly Thomas. Now based in Melbourne, Quivers released several singles and toured internationally, making waves with their 2019 song "You're Not Always on My Mind." In 2020, the band covered R.E.M.'s Out of Time front to back, releasing their own version in limited vinyl editions. The influence of R.E.M., the Go Betweens, the Clean, the Smiths, and other college rock staples became more of a foundation for the band's sound, and they mixed jangly, melancholic guitar pop with Nicholson's world-weary songwriting perspectives on their second album proper, 2021's Golden Doubt. After releasing a limited 7" single in 2022 which featured one new original track and a Lucinda Williams cover, the band began working with U.S. indie label Merge Records. Their next album, Oyster Cuts, would be their first with the label, and it further explored the group's style of intricate, multi-vocalist singing arrangements, boldly personal lyricism, and sharp melodic songcraft. Oyster Cuts was released in August of 2024 and the band toured extensively in support of the album.
