Slowly Rolling Camera
Wales' Slowly Rolling Camera is a soulful outfit known for their eclectic, ambient mix of trip-hop, jazz, and electronic-infused R&B. They debuted in 2014 and gained wider attention with 2016's All Things. They have expanded their approach, with guest improvisors like guitarist Stuart McCallum on 2018's Juniper and Chris Potter for 2023's Flow.
Formed in Cardiff in 2013, Slowly Rolling Camera initially featured Dionne Bennett (vocals), Dave Stapleton (keyboards), Elliot Bennett (drums), and Deri Roberts (production/sound design). Their eponymous full-length debut appeared on Edition Records in 2014. That same year, they delivered the EP Into the Shadow. In 2016, they released their sophomore album All Things featuring the single "Protagonist." Following that album's release, Dionne Benett parted ways with the group. They moved forward as a trio and returned in 2018 with a record that took a more instrumental approach than their previous efforts. The eight-track Juniper featured ex-Cinematic Orchestra guitarist Stuart McCallum, Belgian saxophonist Nicolas Kummert, and bassist Aiden Thorne.
In 2021, they delivered Where the Streets Lead, an even more ambitious production featuring some string arrangements. Along with McCallum, it included contributions by tenor saxophonist Chris Potter, vocalist Sachal Vasandani, tenor and soprano saxophonist Mark Lockheart, and others. Flow arrived in 2023 and found the band again augmented by guitarist McCallum along with saxophonist Josh Arcoleo and trumpeter Verneri Pohjola.
