Gerry Read

Gerry Read began releasing scuffed, off-balance house tracks in 2010, long before "outsider house" and "lo-fi house" became industry buzzwords. Filled with booming, slightly disjointed kick drums and grainy textures, his recordings instantly stand out, yet work as functional dance tracks, somewhat in the vein of Detroit producers like Theo Parrish or Moodymann, but originating from the British dance underground. Following numerous singles, he made his full-length debut with 2012's Jummy and continued releasing music at a prolific rate throughout the decade. Read grew up in Suffolk, and played football as a youth before he got into music. Initially playing guitar and drums, he listened to nu-metal before getting into jungle and IDM. When he began producing electronic music, he first made jungle tracks, but following a hard drive crash, he stopped making music in that style. His tracks slowed down after he started listening to dubstep, but they ended up closer to a mutated version of house and garage. While his family was briefly living in Australia, Read released his first EP, Patterns, on the Dark Arx label in late 2010. Read and his family moved back to England the following year, and he released additional singles on labels like Fourth Wave and 2nd Drop. By the time his debut full-length, Jummy, appeared in 2012, Read's unique sound had attracted the attention of publications such as Pitchfork and FACT. The producer continued to release music on labels like Delsin and Aus Music, and a limited-edition album titled Saucepan Jams was self-released in 2013. Following a 2015 EP for Clone (Stand by the Bomb), Read's cassette Chubby Cheeks was released by Nosaj Thing's Timetable Records in 2016. Ramp Recordings issued the full-length New Junk City in 2017. Subsequent EPs appeared on 2 B Real Records and Matthew Herbert's Accidental Jnr.
