Skaiwater

U.K.-based rapper, producer, and songwriter skaiwater makes yearning, introspective music that takes influence from pop, rap, and emo as well as dance music and rave culture. They collaborated with a then-obscure Lil Nas X in 2018, and continued developing their sound with singles and EPs such as 2019's After God Fear Eve. They broke through with 2022's Jersey club-influenced "#miles," and a remix featuring Lil Uzi Vert was included on their 2022 mixtape rave. Tyler Brooks grew up north of London, in Nottingham. Their father taught them how to use music production programs, and they began making music as Young Skai, eventually choosing the name skaiwater. First interested in EDM artists like Skrillex and Nero, they eventually started listening to Drake and Travis Scott and began making rap-influenced music. Their EP Black appeared in 2018, and they released "No Love" with Lil Nas X, shortly before the viral success of his song "Old Town Road." The EP After God Fear Eve appeared in 2019, and after signing with Cinematic Music Group, skaiwater continued releasing songs such as "Blakehomie" and the alternative rock-influenced "Intu." The EP Party Pack was released in 2020, and Brooks was credited as a co-writer of Lil Nas X's single "Holiday." Mixtape Happy Hour appeared in 2021, with Lil Keed featured on the song "Work!" Two songs influenced by the Jersey club movement, "#miles" and "eyes," appeared in 2022 and became viral hits on TikTok. A "Jersey Mix" of "#miles" featured Bandmanrill and Riovaz, while scene pioneer DJ Sliink remixed the track. A further version, featuring Lil Uzi Vert, landed on the mixtape rave, issued by Geffen in November while skaiwater was touring Europe as an opening act for Lil Nas X.
