JLS

British boy band JLS -- short for Jack the Lad Swing -- are best known for placing second behind winner Alexandra Burke on the fifth season of the reality talent show The X Factor in 2008. Featuring the vocal talents of Oritsé Williams, Aston Merrygold, Jonathan Gill, and Marvin Humes, JLS formed in London in 2007. Post-X Factor, JLS signed with Epic Records and released the single "Beat Again" in 2009. JLS' full-length self-titled debut album was released later that year. In 2010, on the heels of picking up a few Brit Awards, JLS released a six-song self-titled EP as well as their sophomore effort, Outta This World. The band returned in 2011 with the album Jukebox, featuring the single "She Makes Me Wanna." Also in 2011, JLS released the 3-D concert film and accompanying live album Eyes Wide Open. In 2012, they returned with their fourth studio album, Evolution. With production from Mr. Bangladesh (Usher, Beyoncé, T-Pain) and Rodney Jerkins (Michael Jackson, Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber), the release showcased a pop-meets-R&B sound influenced by the '90s new jack swing aesthetic. In April 2013, JLS announced they were going to split up. Marvin Humes stated that, after five years as a band, they didn't want to "outstay their welcome," while Aston Merrygold added, "it’s just that time. We are still the best of friends and always will be -- but this is the end." JLS called it a day after a farewell arena tour and the release of Goodbye: The Greatest Hits. After almost a decade away from music, the group made their return in 2021 with a new album, 2.0, and the Beat Again reunion tour.
