Mia Wray

Influenced by songwriters such as Bob Dylan, the Beatles, and Paul Kelly as well as more contemporary artists like Gabrielle Aplin and Florence + the Machine, Australia's Mia Wray brings a strong sense of melody to her earnest, observant adult pop. Following some early EPs and soundtrack contributions, she made her label debut with the pop-forward, self-examining Stay Awake EP in 2023. Subsequent singles like "Monster Brain" (2023) and "What If" (2024) brought the promise of more to come. Born and raised in Noosa, Queensland, Mia Isobel Wray-McCann started learning to play the piano at the age of 11, when her family inherited her grandfather's piano and put it in her room. She began writing songs not long after, and she eventually taught herself guitar by watching online tutorials. Signed to a publishing deal when she was just 16, Wray released her eponymous debut EP a couple years later, in July 2014. Produced by Greg Walker (aka J. Walker, aka Machine Translations), it made some waves on streaming charts in the singer/songwriter category. The follow-up, April 2016's Send Me Your Love EP, was recorded in Nashville with Brad Jones (Josh Rouse, Missy Higgins). By that time, Wray was based in Melbourne and had years of gigging solo at bars, country clubs, and the like under her belt. In 2018, she contributed the song "Where I Stand" to the soundtrack to the romantic film Midnight Sun, where she appeared alongside WATERS and lead actress Bella Thorne, among others. It would be 2020 before Wray would release an official debut single, "Work for Me," a defiant, blues-infused anthem with stomping drums and a backing chorus. Ivy League Records signed her in early 2021, a year that found Wray nominated for several industry awards and placing second at the International Songwriting Competition. She made her label debut with the Stay Awake EP in February 2023. Full of alternately sleek and gritty, self-examining pop, it was produced by Rob Amoruso (Sappho, Shannen James) and Pip Norman (Troy Sivan, Shannen James). In the meantime, Wray toured with headliners including Vance Joy and Maisie Peters. Just a couple months after Stay Awake was released, Wray kicked off a series of new songs with "Monster Brain." Among the tracks to follow were 2023's "Tell Her" and the next year's "What If."
