Travis Reuter
Guitarist Travis Reuter's music balances complex forms with intricate rhythms, daring improvisation, and abstract concepts. Reuter won the ASCAP Young Jazz Composer Award in 2009 and released his debut album Rotational Templates two years later. He then moved to Zurich, Switzerland, where he played and recorded with musicians such as Lukas Mantel, Will Mason, David Weiss, Roger Kintopf, and Arturo O'Farrill. His second album, simply titled Quintet Music, followed in 2024.
Guitarist Travis Reuter was born in Stephenville, Texas, in February 1986. He moved to New York City to study jazz guitar under Ben Monder, Adam Rogers, and Vic Juris at The New School. After receiving his bachelor's degree, he went on to get a master's degree in composition from Brooklyn College, where he was mentored by Jason Eckardt. At the Montreux Jazz Guitar Competition in 2008, Reuter reached the semi-final and in 2009 he won the ASCAP Young Jazz Composer Award. He played with Curtis Macdonald, appearing on his Community Immunity album in 2011, and released his own debut album Rotational Templates on New Focus the same year, recorded with saxophonist Jeremy Viner, pianist Bobby Avey, bassist Chris Tordini, and drummer Jason Nazary.
Reuter then relocated to Zurich, Switzerland, where he spent the next years performing as a sideman in a variety of settings. Among others, he played and recorded with drummers Will Mason (Beams of the Huge Night, 2015) and Lukas Mantel (Vardah, 2019), trumpeter David Weiss' group Point of Departure (Wake Up Call, 2017), New York noise rock group Horse Torso (Wolf Who Cried Boy, 2019), bassist Roger Kintopf (Structucture, 2020), and Latin jazz pianist Arturo O'Farrill (Dreaming in Lions, 2021).
In April 2024, almost 13 years after his debut, Reuter released his second album as a leader: Quintet Music, recorded with saxophonist Mark Shim, bassist Harish Raghavan, drummer Tyshawn Sorey, and vibraphonist Peter Schlamb.
