Owen Riegling

A country artist whose traditionalist sound is seasoned by his youthful, down-home perspective, Owen Riegling was barely out of his teens when he became a promising new star on the Canadian country scene. Riegling's music is rooted in the engaging melodies of contemporary country while incorporating the semi-acoustic arrangements and classic feel of Americana, brought together by his engaging, unpretentious persona. After making his independent debut with 2021's bluesy "Smoke Man," Riegling landed a major-label contract and scored a pair of hits with 2023's "Old Dirt Roads" and the rustic but hooky "Love (The Sweater Song)." His 2024 EP, Bruce County, brought him an even bigger audience and yielded another hit in "Moonshines." Owen Riegling was born in 1999 and grew up in the rural community of Mildmay in Ontario, Canada. He started picking out tunes on a toy piano at the age of ten, and he was 11 when he got his first guitar as a Christmas present. He began taking guitar lessons, and his instructor saw promise in him, inviting him to join his band. Before long, he was playing in area bars and restaurants nearly every weekend, mostly covering country and classic rock hits, though he would occasionally slip in one of his originals. After completing high school, Riegling went to college to study business, but he decided to take a stab at a career as a musician. He won a block of studio time in London, and the experience prompted him to apply for enrollment at the Ontario Institute of Recording. Riegling spent three semesters at the Institute when he recorded his first single as a class project. "Smoke Man" earned some exposure as a digital single, and he added the track to his first EP, a six-song release called Empty Room that appeared in September 2020. Riegling focused on live work, playing everywhere from local bars to the Ontario country festival Music in the Fields. In 2022, Riegling landed a spot at another major Canadian country festival, Boots & Hearts, as part of an emerging artist's showcase. Universal Music Canada signed Riegling on the strength of his set, and in June 2023, they issued his first single, "Love (The Sweater Song)." It was a success, making the Canadian country singles chart and rising to number 29. The following August, "Old Dirt Roads" enjoyed similar success on Canadian country radio and charted at number 28, while also racking up impressive numbers on major streaming services. As his reputation soared, Riegling landed opening slots on major Canadian tours with Tyler Hubbard, Robyn Ottolini, and Chase Rice. 2024 proved to be a banner year for the young star with the release of his second EP, Bruce County, which yielded a number two single in "Moonshines." He also offered up a cover of the Tragically Hip's classic "Bobcaygeon" and collaborated with MacKenzie Porter on "Coming Home to You (Bigger Houses)."
